Diamond RebsTo Play Winner-Take-All Pizza Bowl Game Friday
11/05/2009 University of Mississippi
OXFORD, Miss. - While the Ole Miss Baseball team won't hit the diamond to compete for a championship until next February, the Rebels will hit field to compete for a different set of bragging rights this Friday with the 2009 edition of the Pizza Bowl.

Friday, the Red and Blue teams will face off in a single game to determine the winner of the annual fall event for the Rebels. All games will be played at Oxford-University Stadium and fans are welcome to come out for the event. Admission is free.

The squad will be divided into two teams and will face off at 2:30 p.m. on Friday.

While there are a lot of new faces on the diamond this season who will be experiencing the Fall World Series for the first time, leading the two squads are a pair of savvy veterans who have been through their share of fall contests.

Serving as captain of the Red is senior shorstop Kevin Mort, while leading the Blue will be senior second baseman Zach Miller. Unlike past seasons where a member of the coaching staff managed each team, this year will find each team under the management of its respective captain.

Both captains are confident heading into the weekend and expect big performances out of their teams.

"We are looking forward to it," Mort said. "It's going to be a lot of fun and an intense game. I'm happy with the players that I have on my team. We're ready to come out and win and eat pizza for our Friday night dinner."

Miller echoed the excitement felt by Mort, but felt that his team would come out on top thanks to the experience on his bench.

"I'm really excited about this year's Pizza Bowl," said Red Team captain Zach Miller. "We've got some pitching depth on our side of things and will hand the ball to Aaron Barrett to start things off. But, with Drew Pomeranz, Eric Callender, Brett Huber and Rory McKean out there we feel we have a great chance. We're going to just battle at the plate and I feel confident in our matchups."
