OXFORD, Miss. -- Matt Snyder came up with a two-run home run in the seventh inning to pull the Rebels to within one run of the Billikens on Tuesday night, but it wasn’t enough as No. 11 Ole Miss (15-6) fell to Saint Louis (12-10) by a score of 15-11 at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. Snyder’s two-run home run, his second home run in as many games, cut the lead to one in the seventh inning at 12-11, but the Billikens answered in the top of the eighth with a three-run shot from Cody Cotter to extend the lead to 15-11 and the final margin of victory for visiting Saint Louis. Wade Broyles (0-1) suffered the loss for the Rebels as he worked 2.0 innings and allowed two runs on two hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Ole Miss never led as Saint Louis moved out to an early 4-0 lead. The Rebels never led, but cut the score to one run twice - trailing 4-3 after a three run third inning and 12-11 after an nine run rally across the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Reliever Jerry Mancuso (1-1) - who started the game at designated hitter - picked up the win for the Billikens coming into the game with two outs in the fourth to relieve starter Andrew Buckham. Mancuso allowed five runs on five hits, including two Rebel home runs, while striking out two and walking one in 3.1 innings of work. “Giving up about 34 runs in two games hasn’t been good or a lot of fun,” said Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco. “It’s a mixture of a lot of things. We’ve not gotten good pitching and defensively we hurt ourselves tonight. We had opportunities to stop them from pushing runs across the plate (but didn’t). I’m proud of the way the offense continues to scratch and claw. It seems we’re never out of the game no matter the score, but you just can’t give up that many runs.” Snyder led the Rebels at the plate with a 3-for-3 performance that included three RBI and two runs scored as he hit a home run for the second straight game. Snyder also hit a grand slam in the ninth inning against No. 24 Alabama on Sunday. Logan Power went 3-for-6 with three runs scored and an RBI, while Jeremy Travis was 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored as he hit his fifth home run of the season. Saint Louis got out to the early lead with two runs in the second and two runs in the third before breaking the game open with a five run fourth inning. With one out on the board, Ryan Bennett reached on a fielding error and then stole second before a single, a double, and a walk would see one run score and load the bases. The Billikens would then use three more hits and a wild pitch to cap a five run rally and take a 9-3 lead on the Rebels. Saint Louis then added three more runs in the fifth, taking advantage of three more hits and another error by the Rebels to take the lead out to 12-3. Ole Miss then fought back, scoring nine runs over the next three innings to cut the lead to one after seven complete. Power opened the fifth with a single and moved to third on a Travis single before scoring on a fielder’s choice from Kyle Henson that saw Travis out at second. Two batters later and with two outs on the board, Zach Miller drew a walk to push Henson to second before a pinch-hitting Matt Snyder came up with a single through the right side to score Henson and move Miller to third. Kevin Mort then singled up the middle to score Miller and Snyder and trim the lead to 12-7. Travis then hit a two run shot in the sixth and Snyder added his two run shot in the seventh to pull the Rebels within one before Cotter hit his three-run shot in the eighth to put the game out of reach and secure he win for Saint Louis. Ole Miss returns to action on Wednesday, traveling to take on Southern Miss in the first of four straight games on the road. The Rebels and Golden Eagles will face-off at 6:30 p.m. |
