OXFORD, Miss. – Fuller Smith paced a torrid Rebel offense on Sunday, going 4-for-5 with a home run and three runs scored, as No. 23 Ole Miss (20-11, 7-5 SEC) belted out 17 hits on the way to an 11-6 win over No. 6 Vanderbilt (19-10, 5-6 SEC). The win gave the Rebels a sweep of the nation’s sixth ranked team and marked the first Southeastern Conference sweep for Ole Miss since the 2006 season when the Rebels swept Michael Guerrero was 3-for-3 at the plate with four RBI and a run scored as six Rebels notched multiple hits on the night. Cody Satterwhite (3-1) picked up the win for the Rebels as he worked 6.2 innings, allowing four runs on six hits with four walks and five strikeouts. Brett Jacobson (1-3) took the loss for the Commodores as he allowed six runs on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts in 3.1 innings of work. “I thought Cody Satterwhite was great, especially early on in the game,” said Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco. “He had a little trouble getting through there one time with a couple of home runs. Sometimes you just have to tip your hat to the other guy. After that he really did well and battled hard, kept his composure and got us into the seventh inning. If you can do that with your Sunday pitcher, that’s a big deal.” Ole Miss got on the board early, scoring three runs in the first inning. The Rebels used back-to-back singles from Fuller Smith and Logan Power to put two on before Cody Overbeck doubled to right center to start the scoring. A walk of Matt Smith loaded the bases and the Rebels pushed two more runs across on a Guerrero sac fly to center field and a single from Zach Miller. Vanderbilt answered with a single run in the fourth when Dominic de la Osa doubled to right field, pushing Pedro Alvarez across the plate from second. Alvarez singled before moving to second on a walk of Ryan Flaherty. The Commodores would go on to load the bases with one out, but Satterwhite struck out the next two batters to get the Rebels out of the inning. With two on in the fourth, Matt Smith doubled to push the lead back up to three as Fuller Smith scored from second and Overbeck moved from first to third. Both Fuller and Overbeck singled to reach base. The Rebels added another run when a single to left field from Guerrero scored Overbeck and put runners at the corners as Matt Smith advanced to third. A groundout to second from Miller pushed Matt Smith across the plate before a single up the middle from Jeremy Tavis added another run and gave the Rebels a 7-1 lead. Vanderbilt put together a two-out rally in the fifth when Pedro Alvarez came up with a two-run home run in the fifth that scored Brad French who reached on a walk a batter earlier. Ryan Flaherty then hit a solo home run to left field to continue the rally and cut the lead to 7-4. De la Osa singled in the next at bat, but was picked off by Satterwhite to end the inning. Fuller Smith homered to open the home half of the seventh and the Rebels would use three more hits to push a total of four runs across in the seventh inning as Ole Miss moved out to an 11-4 lead on the Commodores. Vanderbilt wasn’t done, however, as back-to-back doubles opened up the eighth inning and cut back into the Rebel lead. With two outs on the board, the Commodores would load the bases and Ole Miss would turn to the bullpen to bring in Justin Cryer to relieve Rory McKean. Cryer then struck out the next batter to end the Vanderbilt threat. Ole Miss will return to action on Tuesday as the Rebels continue a nine-game home stand against |
