OXFORD, Miss. (AP) - Jevan Snead threw for three touchdowns and directed six consecutive touchdown drives Saturday as the Blue defeated the Red 55-28 in front of a record crowd of 28,357 in the Ole Miss spring game, known as the Grove Bowl. Saturday's attendance of 28,357 broke the previous record of 28,311 set last year in Ole Miss head coach Houston Nutt's first spring in Oxford. Snead finished 11-of-15 for 254 yards with touchdown strikes of 12, 20 and 70 yards to Shay Hodge, Dexter McCluster and Markeith Summers, respectively. The Blue team, primarily comprised of both No. 1 units, finished with 524 yards of total offense. The scrimmage session featured a variation of traditional rules. The Red team was awarded seven points each quarter. Several skill position players wore “no contact” jerseys, including McClusker and Snead. Devin Thomas led all rushers with 68 yards, including a 53-yard touchdown run in the second period for the Blue. Jacarious Lucas had second half touchdown catches of 19 and 50 yards from reserve quarterbacks Billy Tapp and Nathan Stanley, respectively. The Blue team capitalized on its first drive and took an early 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter thanks to the rushing of Brandon Bolden. Bolden scampered for 29 yards on the second play of the drive, before capping the series with back-to-back rushes of eight and five yards to reach the endzone. Hodge and the Blue team struck again seconds before the end of the first quarter to extend their lead to 14-0. Snead connected with Summers for a gain of 43 yards to highlight the drive, leaving the ball spotted on the Red team’s 28 yard line. Three plays later, Snead found Hodge for a 12-yard touchdown. Jason Jones led the Blue team on defense by finishing with six tackles, including one sack. Antonio Turner added four tackles and two sacks, while both Cassius Vaughn and Fon Ingram finished with five tackles apiece. Craig Drummond paced the Red team on defense as he totaled four tackles and one sack. Jared Mitchell added three solo tackles, while seven others each recorded two tackles.
Today's game marked the conclusion of spring practice. The Rebels open the 2009 season September 6 at 2:30 p.m. when the Rebels travel to Memphis to take on the Tigers. |
