FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. Lady Rebel junior Brittney Reese claimed the Commissioner’s Trophy and set two school records in leading the Ole Miss women’s track and field team to a sixth place finish and the most points scored in school history Sunday afternoon at the SEC Indoor Championships.  The Ole Miss men’s track and field team, hampered by injuries to many of its top competitors, finished in 10th place.

The Lady Rebels finished with 49 points to shatter the previous school record of 32 points Ole Miss set a season ago.  The sixth place finish also ties the 2001 Lady Rebels for the highest indoor finish in school history.  In addition, Reese finished with 31 overall points to earn the Commissioner Trophy and finish with the most points at the SEC Championships in school history, surpassing the 30 points accumulated by Barnabas Kirui last outdoor season.

Reese opened the weekend Saturday afternoon with a first place finish by posting a 22-06.50 mark in the long jump, breaking her American collegiate record in the long jump she set two weeks ago at the Tyson Invitational.  Her new mark set Saturday is a new indoor long jump school record and the best in the NCAA and United States this season.  Reese also earned a sixth place finish in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.29, marking the second best indoor 60 meter time in school history.

Sunday saw Reese finish second in the triple jump and set a new indoor school record with a NCAA provisional mark of 42-08.75.  Reese went on to be named SEC champion in the high jump as she set a meet record with a mark of 6-02.00.  Her high jump mark currently ranks as the third best jump in the country.

“This is one of the all-time great performances,” head coach Joe Walker said.  “I’ve been in coaching for 39 years and the show the Brittney put on today was the greatest performance I have ever seen.”

Lady Rebel senior Carmia Carroll also recorded a pair of top-10 finished highlighted by her sixth place showing in the high jump with a mark of 5-07.75.  Carroll also recorded a ninth place showing in the triple jump with a mark of 40-05.00.

Field events were also kind to sophomore Davina Orieukwu as she recorded a new school indoor record as she turned in a fourth place showing in the shot put with a distance of 50-06.00.  Like Reese, Orieukwu broke her own record in the shot put, which she also set at the Tyson Invitational.  Freshman Julianna Smith posted the fourth best indoor distance in school history with her mark of 45-03.75 to earn an 11th place finish in the event.

On the men’s side, senior Rickie Bratton tied the third best indoor time in school history with a mark of 21.40 in the 200 meters to record an eighth place finish.  Bratton also collected a 10th place finish in the 60 meters with a time of 6.80.  Senior Derek Johnson also placed 10th in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 7.96, marking the fourth best indoor time in school history.

Junior Justin Gunn recorded the third best indoor long jump mark in school history with a distance of 25-06.00 to finish in second place.  Fellow junior James Maloney also etched his name in the record books as his mark of 63-02.00 in the weight throw was the second furthest in indoor school history.

Junior Wale Odetunde finished in fourth place in the triple jump with a mark of 50-10.75, while also taking 12th in the long jump with a distance of 23-05.50.

Before NCAA Championships are slated to take place Mar. 14-15, Ole Miss will have one last chance to post NCAA qualifying marks when the Rebels take part in NCAA qualifying meets next weekend.  Ole Miss will split between the Notre Dame qualifying meet and the Arkansas qualifying meet.
