OXFORD, Miss. -- Brett Basham came up with a big two-RBI double in the second inning to spark a four run rally as No. 12 Ole Miss (13-4, 2-1 SEC) defeated Memphis (8-10) by a score of 7-4 on Wednesday night at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. Jordan Henry set the tone from the lead-off position, going 3-for-4 with a walk and three runs scored to lead the Rebels at the plate. Jeremy Travis also notched his third home run of the season, a solo shot in the fifth inning to give the Rebels some breathing room on the way to the win. Nathan Baker (1-0) picked up the win in relief, working 3.0 scoreless innings and holding the Tigers off the board in a one-run game. Baker allowed three hits and walked two with four strikeouts in his time on the mound. Reliever Scott Bittle picked up his third save of the season as he closed out the ninth, striking out two of the three batters he faced. “Certainly it was another good game for us and I thought both teams played well tonight,” said Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco. “One of the things I am proud of is how we continue to not panic. We are an unbelievable 6-0 when the other team scores first and it’s not supposed to be like that. We continue to keep our heads up, not panic and put some at bats together.” Memphis starter Ryan Holland (0-1) suffered the loss as he allowed four runs on three hits with two walks and no strikeouts in 1.1 innings of work. The Tigers jumped out to the early lead on the Rebels, loading the bases and using three hits to push three runs across the plate and take the quick 3-0 lead. Ole Miss answered in the bottom half of the frame with a sac fly from Logan Power that scored Henry from third. Henry doubled to open the inning before stealing third to get in position to score on the Power fly out and trim the lead to 3-1. The Rebels then used a big inning in the bottom of the second to take the lead, pushing four runs across the plate on three hits and capitalizing on an error to move ahead of the Tigers 4-3. The rally started with a big two-RBI double from Basham that scored Matt Smith and Evan Button - both of whom drew walks to reach base - before scoring on the Basham hit and tying the game at three. Ole Miss moved into the lead when Basham scored on a single from Henry. Tim Ferguson moved Henry to third on a single to set up the Rebels fifth run. Henry scored on a throwing error by the pitcher in an attempt to pick off Tim Ferguson at first to give the Rebels the 5-3 advantage. Memphis cut the lead to one in the third with a solo home run from Cole Shelton, but that was as close as the Tigers would get. The Rebels would go on to add a single run in the fifth - Travis’ solo shot to left field - and another run in the eighth for the final margin of 7-4. Ole Miss will return to action on Friday when the 12th-ranked Rebels host 24th-ranked Alabama in a three-game series at Oxford-University Stadium. It is the SEC home opener for the Rebels with first-pitch Friday set for 6:30 p.m. |
