Kentucky vs Ole Miss - Game 2 (4.4.09)

OXFORD, Miss. -- The Rebel offense used a pair of big innings, including a six-run third, to claim a series win over Kentucky (18-11, 4-7 SEC) on Saturday as No. 15 Ole Miss (21-8, 7-4 SEC) took down the Wildcats 10-3 at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.

It started with a pair of walks and an RBI single from Jeremy Travis before Ole Miss would go on to use five hits, three walks and a bases loaded RBI sac bunt from Zach Miller to plate six runs and give Ole Miss a 6-1 lead after three complete. The Rebels would not trail again on the way to the 10-3 victory.

Drew Pomeranz (3-0) picked up the win for the Rebels as he worked 6.2 innings and held the Wildcats to one run on seven hits with two walks and eight strikeouts.

Kentucky starter Chris Rusin (4-2) suffered the loss as he allowed six runs on 10 hits with four walks and three strikeouts in the outing.

Matt Smith led the Rebels at the plate, going 4-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored.

“I thought we played well tonight,” said Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco. “It was a pretty clean game. Offensively we put an inning together early against Rusin, which hasn’t been our method of operation the past week or so. We had some good at bats and had some good hits and some that found holes. We were able to capitalize on our opportunities.”

Kentucky struck first, scoring in the top of the third when Chris Bisson crossed the plate from third on a wild pitch from Pomeranz. Bisson singled to reach base before moving to second on a wild pitch. He then took third on a ground out from Chris Wade before scoring on the wild pitch two batters later.

Ole Miss then responded in the bottom half of the frame with the six run outburst sparked by a pair of walks from Taylor Hashman and Logan Power before the RBI single from Jeremy Travis. Travis’ single was the first of three before Miller came up with a bases-loaded sac bunt to score Kyle Henson as the Rebels used five total hits and drew three walks in the inning to claim the lead.

The Rebels would add to the lead in the seventh inning when the Ole Miss offense again produced a big outing, scoring four runs in the frame to take a 10-1 lead. The Rebels sent nine men to the plate and used five hits and a walk in the first eight batters to plate the four runs and claim the nine-run advantage.

The Wildcats would push two more runs across in the ninth, however, cutting the score to 10-3 for the final margin of victory as Andy Burns and pinch-hitter Michael Williams used a single and a double to put two men on for Chris Bisson. Bisson then hit a grounder to second with two outs, but a throwing error allowed Bisson to reach safely and two runs to score. Rebel southpaw Nathan Baker then got Wade to ground into a fielders choice as the Rebels threw Bisson out at second to claim the win.

Ole Miss and Kentucky will face off in the final game of the series at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
