OXFORD, Miss. -- The Rebel pitching tandem of Scott Bittle and Jake Morgan held the Gamecock offense to one run on four hits on Sunday as No. 14 Ole Miss (25-10, 9-6 SEC) defeated South Carolina (23-12, 7-8 SEC) on Sunday. Bittle (3-2) picked up the win as he held the Gamecocks to one run on four hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. The one run came on a solo home run from DeAngelo Mack in the sixth inning, snapping Bittle’s streak of scoreless innings pitched at 21.1 innings of work. Morgan then picked up his fourth save as he closed out the final 3.0 innings, holding the Gamecocks hitless as he retired nine straight batters to seal the win. Blake Cooper (4-3) suffered the loss for the Gamecocks as he worked 6.2 innings and allowed five runs - four earned - on nine hits with a walk and four strikeouts. “We played much better today,” said Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco. “The game was about pitching and I thought Scott Bittle was tremendous. He did a great job. Early on, Blake Cooper made it difficult on us staying ahead, throwing a good mix of pitches and staying in the strike zone. We finally put some at bats together in the sixth inning.” South Carolina got on the board first, scoring what would be the Gamecocks’ only run when Mack hit a solo shot to left center in he sixth inning. Ole Miss answered in the bottom half, pushing two runs across to take the 2-1 lead. Matt Snyder singled before moving to second on a single from Matt Smith. Snyder then scored when David Phillips laid down a sac bunt, but a throwing error from the Gamecock third baseman allowed Phillips to reach safely and Snyder to score. Smith moved to third on the play Smith then scored the go ahead run on a sacrifice fly to center field from Zach Miller and Ole Miss took a 2-1 lead. The Rebels then added three runs in the seventh. Jordan Henry singled and stole second before scoring on a single from pinch-hitter Michael Hubbard. Hubbard then moved to second on a single from Smith before both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Taylor Hashman came in as a pinch hitter and drove in both runners with a single to right center and the Rebels held a 5-1 lead. Ole Miss pushed its final run of the game across in the eighth inning when Evan Button scored on a groundout from Brett Basham. Button opened the inning with a single and moved to third on a single from Kevin Mort a batter later. Ole Miss will return to action on Tuesday when the Rebels will face Mississippi State in a non-conference game at Trustmark Park in Pearl, Miss. The annual Governor’s Cup game will begin at 6:30 p.m. with the Rebels serving as the home team in the contest.
