Smith also scored two runs and notched an RBI, while Cody Overbeck hit his sixth home run of the season. Jeremy Travis, who drew the start in right field, also came up big for the Rebels with a 2-for-3 performance with a walk and three RBI. Jake Morgan (1-0) picked up the win as he worked 5.0 innings, allowing four runs – three earned – on seven hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Adam Champion (1-2) took the loss for the Trojans as he allowed six runs on four hits with a walk and no strikeouts in 2.1 innings of work. “It was a good night for us offensively," said Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco. "We did a good job and swung the bat well. Fuller Smith continues to swing a great bat and Matt Smith looked like he did a week ago. I thought we did a good job. We wanted Jake Morgan to give us some innings and he certainly did that.” The Trojans struck first as Brad Swiderski hit a two-run shot to left field that scored Robert Taylor from first. The Rebels responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Matt Smith was hit by pitch before moving to second on a passed ball. He then advanced to third on a double from Michael Guerrero. Smith then scored on a ground out to short from Kyle Mills that moved Guerrero to third. Guerrero then scored on a sac fly to right field from Jeremy Travis to cut the lead to one at 3-2. Cody Overbeck added a three-run home run in the third inning to give the Rebels the lead 5-3. Also scoring on the play were Tim Ferguson, who reached on a single, and Zach Miller who drew a four-pitch walk in the next at bat. The Trojans then went to the pen after Matt Smith doubled to the wall in left center. Smith moved to third on a single from Fuller Smith and both runners then scored on a double to center from Jeremy Travis. The Rebels lead 7-3 after the third. Matt Smith homered to open the fifth in another big inning for the Rebels as Ole Miss would use four hits to push three runs across the plate and extend the lead to 10-4. The Rebels continued to build on the lead in the sixth as Fuller Smith came up with an RBI single with runners at the corners. Ole Miss proceeded to load the bases from there before Brett Basham came up with an RBI single down the left field line to push a second run across and give the Rebels a 12-4 lead. UALR managed to get a fifth run across in the ninth, loading the bases with two outs before Wade Broyles walked in a run. Broyles recovered, however and got the next batter to fly out to center field, securing the 12-5 Rebel win. Ole Miss will return to conference play this weekend, hosting the Florida Gators in a three game set. First pitch for Friday’s game is set for 6:30 p.m. at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. |
