OXFORD, Miss. – Drew Pomeranz worked a career-long 7.0 scoreless innings as he struck out seven and walked only two to help push No. 23 Ole Miss (19-11, 6-5 SEC) to an 8-0 win over No. 6 Vanderbilt (19-9, 5-5 SEC) in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday.

The shutout was the first for the Rebels on the year and first over an SEC foe since Ole Miss picked up a 5-0 win over Arkansas in the regular-season finale in 2007.

With the win, the Rebels claimed the series with Vanderbilt for the first time since the 2004 season. Ole Miss won the first game of the doubleheader 7-6 earlier in the day. The pair of wins also pushed head coach Mike Bianco past the 400 mark for career wins and 300 mark for wins at Ole Miss.

Drew Pomeranz (2-1) picked up the win for the Rebels as he worked 7.0 scoreless innings, holding the Commodores to five hits as he struck out seven and walked only two.

Caleb Cotham (4-2) took the loss for Vanderbilt as he allowed five runs on five hits with three walks and five strikeouts. Only four of the runs were earned.

Cody Overbeck led the Rebel offense with a 2-for-4 performance as he scored twice and drove in two runs, while Fuller Smith also came up with two hits, an RBI and a run scored.

“I thought one of the things that really made Drew Pomeranz effective today is that he was in the strike zone all day,” said Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco. “He had that one inning where he started to get tired in the seventh and then he got the strikeout. I thought that was a big inning for him. He walked de la Osa and now you have to face Alvarez and Flaherty and he gets back to back strikeouts. That was huge. He was tremendous today.”

Ole Miss jumped out to an early lead when Matt Smith came up with a two-run home run in the first inning, scoring Cody Overbeck on the play. Overbeck reached on a single to left center in the previous at bat as the Rebels claimed a 2-0 lead in the first.

The Rebels added to the lead in the third inning when Fuller Smith scored on a sac fly to right field from Overbeck. Fuller doubled before moving to third on an interference call during a rundown as Fuller tried to advance on a bunt from Logan Power.

Overbeck hit a solo home run to straight away center in the fifth inning to push the Rebels out to a 4-0 advantage.

Vanderbilt mounted a rally in the sixth inning, putting two on with one out and the meat of the order up. Pomeranz worked efficiently, though, striking out Alvarez and Flaherty to get the Rebels out of the inning and preserve the lead.

Ole Miss continued to build on the lead in the bottom half of the inning as Tim Ferguson doubled to left center to score Zach Miller from second. Miller walked to open the inning before stealing second.

Three more runs crossed the plate for the Rebels in the eighth inning as Ole Miss used four singles and a double to push the lead out to 8-0.

Justin Cryer would shut down the Commodores the rest of the way to preserve the shut out for the Rebels.

Ole Miss and Vanderbilt will conclude the series beginning at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
