OXFORD, Miss. – The Rebels made the most of their hits on Wednesday, including a three-run home run from Michael Guerrero, as No. 18 Ole Miss (22-11) used 10 hits to push its way to a 10-2 win over South Alabama (18-15). Guerrero paced the Rebels as he went 2-for-3 on the night with three runs scored and four RBI. With the win, Ole Miss pushed its win streak to seven games heading into the weekend series with LSU. Brett Bukvich (1-1) picked up his first win of the season as he entered the game in the fifth and turned in 2.0 scoreless innings as he held the Jaguars hitless and notched three strikeouts. Bukvich relieved starter Phillip Irwin who went 4.0 innings and allowed two runs on five hits with no walks and three strikeouts. Chris LaGrow (1-1) took the loss for the Jaguars as he allowed six runs on five hits with two walks. Only three of the runs were earned. “It was almost the opposite of last night where we had a lot of single-run innings and really couldn’t put the inning together,” Bianco said. “Tonight, we have two four-run innings and a two-run inning and really that is what it is about. We had more hits last night, but it is hard to argue with that kind of offense and it was nice to see.” The Rebels tied things in the bottom half of the inning with back-to-back doubles from Jeremy Travis and Logan Power. Ole Miss continued to build from there, loading the bases with two outs before a walk of Logan Williams pushed a second run across. Sean Stuyverson then doubled to left field two push two more runs across as the Rebels moved out to a 4-1 lead. The Jaguars mounted a rally in the top of the second, loading the bases with one out before a groundout to first from Kruml pushed a run across and cut the lead to 4-2. Ole Miss extended the lead in the third when Matt Smith scored from second on a double to left center from Michael Guerrero. Matt Smith reached on a single to right field and then stole second. Jeremy Travis reached on a fielding error on a high fly ball to right field that was dropped by the fielder, allowing Travis to move to third before scoring on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Guerrero then hit a three-run home run to push the Rebels out to a 10-2 lead after the fourth. Neither team would score from there as Ole Miss picked up the win. Ole Miss will return to action this weekend when the Rebels play a three-game set against LSU. First pitch for Friday night’s game is set for 6:30 p.m. at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. |
