OXFORD, Miss. – The Rebels used the long ball to break open Friday’s game against the Razorbacks as Logan Power, Cody Overbeck and Logan Williams all hit home runs to power No. 21 Ole Miss (28-15, 11-8 SEC) to a 12-4 win over Arkansas (24-18, 7-11 SEC). Power led the Rebels with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate with two runs scored and two RBI, while Overbeck was 2-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI. Williams’ only hit of the night was his three-run shot as he tallied a run and three RBI. Lance Lynn (6-1) picked up the win as he allowed four runs – one earned – on six hits with five walks and six strikeouts. Scott Bittle picked up his sixth save of the season as he entered the game in the sixth with a man on second and the tying run on deck as the Rebels held a 7-4 lead. Bittle worked the final 3.1 innings, allowing one hit with two walks and seven strikeouts. Dallas Keuchel (3-2) suffered the loss for the Razorbacks as he allowed nine runs – eight earned – on nine hits with three walks and three strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work. “Logan Williams has been a nice addition to the team,” said Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco. “When you make lineup changes, you are hopeful. He’s been a spark of energy. He plays well. He gave up his red shirt and got a couple of hits this week and two big home runs in the last two games.” Ole Miss jumped out to an early lead as Logan Power and Cody Overbeck hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning to push the Rebels out to a 2-0 lead. The two out rally came on three pitches as Power took the first pitch over the fence before Overbeck hit his with a 1-0 count. Arkansas got on the board in the top of the second as Scott Lyons flew out to right field with two runners on. Brett Eibner scored on the play as he moved from second to third, and the throw hit him at the bag and rolled into the dugout allowing him to score. Ryan Cisterna advanced to third on the play by rule. Lynn got the net batter to fly out foul to third, leaving the Rebels with the 2-1 lead. Ole Miss moved back out to a two run lead in the fourth when Zach Miller scored from second on a throwing error on a grounder to third from Brett Basham. The throw sailed over the head of the Arkansas first baseman and out of the park, allowing Basham to move to second and Miller to score on the play. Ole Miss led 3-1 after the fourth. The Razorbacks cut back into the lead with a two out rally in the fifth as a pop up to third was lost in the lights, allowing Logan Forsythe to reach on a double and advancing Leavitt home from second and moving Ben Tschepikow to third. The Rebels then intentionally walked Jeff Nutt to load the bases with two outs. A four pitch walk to Casey Coon pushed another run across and tied the game at three. Lynn then struck out Eibner to end the rally for the Razorbacks. The Rebels rocketed back into the lead in the bottom half of the inning with their own two out rally. With two outs and two on, Power scored from second on a single through the right side from Miller. Logan Williams then hit his second home run in as many games as he hit a shot over the wall in right center to score three more runs and give the Rebels a 7-3 lead. Ryan Cisterna then hit his own home run in the sixth, cutting the lead back to three at 7-4.With two outs on the board, the Razorbacks put a runner at second causing the Rebels to go to the bullpen for Bittle. The right-hander struck out the first batter faced to get the Rebels out of the inning. Ole Miss built on its lead in the bottom of the sixth as Fuller Smith was hit by a pitch before three straight singles pushed two more runs across and gave the Rebels a 9-4 lead. The lead grew to 11-4 in the seventh as Ole Miss used two lead off walks to spark another scoring burst. Following the back-to-back walks to open the inning, a fielder’s choice and a pair of singles pushed two more runs across the plate. Ole Miss pushed a final run across in the eighth inning for the final 12-4 margin of victory as Bittle closed out the ninth. The Rebels and Razorbacks will take to the field for the second game of the series at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. |
