Arkansas State vs Ole Miss - 3.3.09

OXFORD, Miss. -- Jeremy Travis led an efficient offense for the Rebels on Tuesday as the senior drove in four runs as No. 14 Ole Miss (4-3) defeated Arkansas State (2-4) by a score of 11-5 on Tuesday night at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.

Logan Power also turned in a solid offensive performance, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored while drawing one walk on the night.

Phillip Irwin (1-0) picked up the win in relief as he worked 4.0 innings and allowed one run on four hits with two strikeouts.

Jett Jones (0-1) suffered the loss for the Red Wolves as he allowed six runs on four hits with a walk and four strikeouts.

“It was a game where we did a good job offensively,” said Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco. “We didn’t get as many his as we have been, but we were very efficient. We had good base running and were able to steal some bases. The difference was we put together some good at bats.”

Arkansas State struck first as the Red Wolves loaded the bases in the first inning before Derek Coleman drew a walk on a full count with the bases loaded to push a run across and take the 1-0 lead.

The Rebels answered in the bottom half of the frame when Logan Power came up with a two-RBI double down the left field line, scoring Taylor Hashman and Matt Smith. Hashman walked to open the inning before Smith was hit by a pitch. Power’s double pushed the Rebels in front 2-1.

The Red Wolves tied the game in the third with an RBI single from Brandon Eller that scored Murray Watts from second. Watts doubled in the previous at bat with two outs to get into scoring position for Arkansas State.

Ole Miss moved back in front in the bottom half of the third as Tim Ferguson scored from third on a passed ball. He reached on a single before stealing second. He then moved to third on a single up he middle from Power before scoring on a passed ball on a pitch to Kyle Henson. Henson reached when he was hit by a pitch to put two men on before Jeremy Travis hit a three-run shot to left field to give Ole Miss a 6-2 lead.

The Rebels extended the lead in the fifth when Power scored on a groundout from Travis. Power walked to reach base before moving to second on a walk of David Phillips. Both runners then advanced on a double steal before Power scored on the groundout to give Ole Miss the 7-2 lead.

Ole Miss added four more runs in he sixth inning, taking advantage of a fielding error by the Red Wolves and putting together a run of hits highlighted by a two-RBI triple from Matt Smith. The Rebels held an 11-2 lead at the end of six.

Arkansas State managed a rally in he eighth, scoring three runs on four hits to trim the lead to the final margin of 11-5.

Ole Miss will return to action on Friday when he Rebels host the Vermont Catamounts in a three-game series. First pitch on Friday is set for 7 p.m. at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
