OXFORD, Miss. – In a back-and-forth game that
featured a little bit of everything, Ole Miss provided the final magic as Lisa
Conchos and Ashley Dowdy both hit solo homers in the bottom of the seventh
inning to give the Rebels a 7-6 victory over No. 12 Tennessee on Senior Day at
the Ole Miss Softball Complex. The victory gave Ole Miss (20-25, 7-18 SEC) its first series win
over the Lady Vols (35-11-1, 11-8-1 SEC) and pushed the Rebels back into the SEC Tournament picture.
Trailing 6-5 entering the Rebels’ last at-bat, UT starting
pitcher Cat Hosfield struck out freshman Corrine Doornberg on three pitches to
bring the senior Conchos to the plate. Making
the most out of her final home SEC game, Conchos
blasted a line drive home run to left on Hosfield’s first offering to tie the
game at six. Hosfield came back to strike out Courtnie Ghinaudo for the second
out, placing the game in Dowdy’s hands. Facing the Rebels’ last chance, Dowdy
took Hosfield’s 1-0 pitch deep over the fence in left center for the walk-off
home run.
“This was an amazing game,” said Ole Miss head coach Missy
Dickerson. “The girls kept battling and found a way to win. They are the ones
who wanted to keep playing after the rain delay, and even after Lauren (Grill)
went out with the injury they rallied around her. Lisa (Conchos)
and Ashley (Dowdy) both had huge hits for us. This was a really big win.”
Tennessee
took an early lead with a four spot in the top of the first helped out by two
walks and a hit by pitch from Rebel starting pitcher Lindsey Perry. Third
baseman Jessica Spigner knocked in a run on single to open the scoring and
Perry then issued a bases-loaded walk and hit a batter to give the Lady Vols a
3-0 advantage. Becky Nye entered in relief of Perry and only allowed Tennessee one more run
in the frame on a fielding error by Grill.
Nye picked up the win after pitching the final 6.2 innings.
She struck out five and allowed two runs on six hits. Perry, who started, pitch
0.2 inning and gave up four runs, three earned, on two hits.
Ole Miss battled right back in the bottom of the first, as first
baseman Molly Goza blasted a three-run home run to dead center to put the Rebels
right back into the game. It was Goza’s first career home run and scored Conchos and Dowdy, who had both walked earlier in the frame.
Goza finished the game 1-for-3 at the plate with a
career-high five RBI. Conchos and Dowdy both finished 2-for-3 with one RBI,
while Conchos scored three times and Dowdy
scored twice.
The Lady Vols extended their lead in the fourth with another
RBI single to right from Spigner. The base knock scored Tiffany Huff and gave Tennessee a 5-3
advantage.
The Rebels tied the game at five in the fifth on a two-RBI
fielder’s choice from Goza. Conchos singled up
the middle with one down in the inning and Grill was intentionally walked to
give the Rebels runners on first and second. Dowdy then singled to third to
load the bases and bring up Goza. The sophomore grounded to shortstop Ashley
Andrews, who flipped to second to put Dowdy out, but UT second baseman Nicole
Kajitani held onto the ball and allowed Conchos to score from third and Grill
to come home all the way from second.
Serve weather rolled into the Oxford area in the bottom of the fifth,
causing a 1:50 delay. The actual rainfall only lasted approximately 30 minutes,
but the Ole Miss dugout was flooded by two feet of water from the tarp further
delaying the game until it was emptied.
When the game resumed, Tennessee took a 6-5 lead in the top of the
sixth on a bases-loaded sac fly to shallow left by right fielder Erinn Webb. Both
teams went quietly in the bottom of the sixth and top of the seventh, until Conchos and Dowdy provided the Rebels with the win.
Ole Miss will host Central Arkansas for a doubleheader Wednesday
at 4 p.m. in the final home game of the season, before traveling to Jacksonville State on Thursday for a single game at 4
p.m.
