In Their Own Words: Rebels' Choice Awards

Football, soccer and men's track and field were among the big winners at the fourth annual  Rebels' Choice Awards Monday night.

The event featured a red carpet for student-athletes and athletic department staff before the program, which included a season highlight video, blooper reel, special recognition for Jamil Northcutt, assistant A.D. for internal operations, and the awards themselves.

Deterrian Shackelford, a previous recipient of the Community Service Award in 2012 and the Chucky Mullins Award in 2011, took home the men's Hotty Toddy award, one of seven different awards for the football team, which also included coach of the year (Hugh Freeze).

"Jamil Northcutt was one of my mentors and somebody that I have looked up to since I have gotten here," Shackelford said. "This event allows our athletes to come together, which we rarely do because we're always in different places and always competing. Every award I remember I accepted on crutches, so to be able to walk is certainly a blessing."

Soccer took home three awards, including team of the year and most valuable Rebel (Rafaelle Souza), while men's track and field won both team of the year and most valuable Rebel (Sam Kendricks).

"It was a really good night, said Mandy McCalla, who accepted the team of the year award on behalf of soccer. "We put a lot of effort into this past season, so it's really nice to have something like this to show for our hard work. It's really special."

"As an individual, I do what I can do, but I'm glad to have these people behind me," said Kendricks, the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Pole Vault champion. "We all work hard individually, but we all know we're backing each other up. I could hear them in the crowd."
