From The Tee Box - 2017 SEC Championships - Day 1

As the Ole Miss women's golf team tees it up this weekend at the 2017 SEC Championships at Greystone Golf and Country Club in Birmingham, OleMissSports.com tagged along to record some of the behind-the-scenes action and each day will bring five observations from the round.

Round One - Friday April 21

Marti With An Impressive Back Nine

Sophomore Martina Flori (Montecatini Terme, Italy) had a bit of a coming out party at the SEC Championship in 2016, shooting a then career-best. Flash forward a year and she still really enjoys Greystone Golf and Country Club. The Italian native shot an even par 72 but her back nine was something to talk about. She tallied four straight birdies to open, a double bogey and a bogey, a par and closed the round with a birdie. In total she posted six birdies on the back nine and even with a double bogey and a bogey was 2-under on the back nine! #Impressive

What's In YOUR Bag

18 holes is quite a bit of golf for a day and OleMissSports.com imagined that the Ole Miss women's golf team had some things in their golf bags that they couldn't do without. So we asked the Rebels:

"What's one thing in your golf bag that's not a club that you couldn't play a round of golf without?

Madisen Bentley - Food and Water (Keeping it simple and just the necessities)

Maria Toennessen - Pink marker (The Norwegian likes pink and uses it to mark her ball)

Katy Harris - Range Finder (No explanation needed)

Martina Flori - Her secret lucky charm (We have no idea what it is since it's a secret but it's ALWAYS in her bag)

And the best answer of the day came from rookie, Pi Hermansson and it's in the form of a quote

Pi - "I have a grocery store on the right side of the my bag and a pharmacy on the left side"

Pi With A Good Outing In First SEC Championship

For the sixth straight year, Ole Miss has had a "rookie" in the starting five at the SEC Championship as Pi-Lillebi Hermansson played No. 2 for the Rebels today.  The Djursholm, Sweden native fired an opening round 3-over par 75 in her first round at Greystone Country Club. Her 75 ties senior Maria Toennessen for the second-lowest first round in the SEC Championship for an Ole Miss freshman in the last six seasons.

New Format For 2017

For the 2017 SEC Championships the Rebels played in twosomes instead of threesomes. The SEC coaches decided that this would increase the pace of play on the course. The Rebels teed off at 8 am and played with LSU on the opening day of play. Additionally, everyone teed off from hole No. 1 instead of a combination of hole No. 1 and No. 10 and will do so for the entirety of the championship.

Day One Outfit

To kick off the first day of tournament action, Ole Miss donned gray skirts and red razorback tanks with the Ole Miss script on the front.

PSA - If you are planning to come out to Greystone to cheer the Rebels on make sure you bring bug spray! The mosquitoes are swarming something FIERCE and they will definitely be all over our sweet Rebel fans! #HottyToddy

How can you have five straight top 25 recruiting classes and look as bad as Ole Miss has this year. Easy lack of coaching fundamentals. Look at Mason at Vandy, nothing but 2 and 3 star recruits out of high school and he developers players that want to win. Hugh freeze has 3, 4 & 5 recruits and he expects them to win because of what they were in High School. Mr. Freeze you have not been teaching the fundamentals of football or winning in life. Mr. Freeze you have quit on your players because you have some false expectations of what they are instead of what you can develop in them. Either do your job or quit. Oh yea, please quit running your smoke and mirrors offense, everyone has figured it out. Run a physical offense that can open up holes for your running backs and then your pass attack want require 12 are 14 four and five star receivers. Mr. Freeze you have problems and you need to know that you are not smarter than the rest of the coaches in the SEC.

Not every pass can be caught. Too low, too short whatever. Not every Kelly pass is perfect. Records were broken by receivers also. But they sre not going to catch every ball thrown. The loss to Auburn was not one players fault. You win or lose as a team.
