Heather Landry Shirley, MA, ATC, NCTMB, currently serves as Senior Athletic Trainer working primarily with Softball and Volleyball with the aid of a graduate assistant athletic trainer. Shirley is responsible for assisting the Senior Associate Athletics Director of Sports Medicine and Strength & Conditioning with various administrative duties including the oversight of the Wesley "Doc" Knight Fieldhouse/Starnes Athletic Training Room. Shirley oversees administrative duties with all graduate assistant athletic trainers, as well as serving as the direct staff supervisor of those working with men's and women's tennis. In conjunction with her daily work responsibilities, Shirley is currently pursuing her PhD in Higher Education here at Ole Miss.
Prior to her current position, Shirley served as the primary athletic trainer for Women's Basketball from 2004-2011. Shirley arrived at Ole Miss in the summer of 2002 and served as a Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer working directly with the men's and women's basketball squads, men's and women's golf, and rifle. After assisting with both basketball squads for over a year, Shirley spent the spring 2004 semester as the primary athletic trainer for women's basketball on an interim basis, before being hired full-time as an assistant athletic trainer in June 2004. Shirley was then promoted to Senior Athletic Trainer in 2007.
A Baker, La., native, Shirley received her master's degree in Higher Education at Ole Miss in May of 2004.
She graduated from Louisiana State University in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology. During her time on the LSU athletic training staff, Shirley worked with the Tiger football, women's tennis, volleyball and women's soccer teams. In 1998, she received the Adam Sturlese Memorial Student Athletic Trainer of the Year award.
Following her graduation from LSU, Shirley worked as a Physical Therapy Technician at Moreau Physical Therapy until 2002. In her position, Shirley assisted physical therapists with daily treatments, including modalities, rehabilitation, and inventory. Shirley simultaneously attended Massage Therapy School at Medical Training College. Shirley is a licensed massage therapist and her expertise is used often in the athletic training room.
She was elected secretary for the Mississippi Athletic Trainer's Association in July 2008.
Heather married William Shirley in July 2010. She is the daughter of Sandra LaValley and the proud owner of a chocolate lab named Baylee.
