Heather Landry Shirley, PhD, ATC, BCTMB/LMT, currently serves as assistant athletic director of sports medicine and athletic trainer for the women’s volleyball team. Shirley is responsible for assisting the senior associate athletics director of health and sports performance with various administrative duties including oversight of the Wesley "Doc" Knight Fieldhouse/Starnes Athletic Training Room. She is a member of the Disordered Eating Treatment Team and the Wellness Committee, two groups that were developed by Health and Sports Performance as a means to enhance the overall healthcare and well-being of student-athletes. She also serves as the primary supervisor for several staff and graduate assistant athletic trainers including those responsible for the sports of baseball, women’s soccer, softball, men’s tennis, women’s tennis, rifle, and the spirit squads.

Shirley arrived at Ole Miss in the summer of 2002 and served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer working directly with men's and women's basketball, men's and women's golf, and rifle. After assisting with both basketball squads for over a year, Shirley spent the 2004 spring semester as the primary athletic trainer for women's basketball on an interim basis, before being hired full-time as an assistant athletic trainer in June 2004. Shirley was promoted to senior athletic trainer in 2007 and now to her current position in the spring of 2015. During her time at Ole Miss, Shirley has served as the primary athletic trainer for women's basketball from 2004-2011, softball and volleyball from 2011-2014 and now serves solely as the women’s volleyball athletic trainer.

From May 2001 to May 2002, Shirley worked as a physical therapy technician at Moreau Physical Therapy. In her position, Shirley assisted physical therapists with daily treatments, including modalities, rehabilitation, and inventory. Shirley simultaneously attended Massage Therapy School at Medical Training College from which she graduated in May 2002.

Shirley earned a bachelor of science degree in Kinesiology from Louisiana State University in 2001. During her time at LSU, Shirley served as a student athletic trainer for the Tigers’ football, women's tennis, volleyball and women's soccer teams. In 1998, she received the Adam Sturlese Memorial Student Athletic Trainer of the Year Award.

Following graduation from LSU, she went on to receive her master’s degree in Higher Education at Ole Miss in 2004 and her doctorate in Higher Education at Ole Miss in 2015.

Shirley is a board certified athletic trainer by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, as well as a board certified and state licensed massage therapist. She has certification in CPR/AED and serves as lead CPR instructor. From 2008-2012, Shirley served as secretary for the Mississippi Athletic Trainer's Association.

A Baker, Louisiana native, Shirley is married to William Shirley of Pontotoc, Mississippi. They have a son, Colton.
