Rebels Race to Fast Times in Arkansas

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - In the biggest test of the indoor season so far, Ole Miss won three individual event titles and posted some of the nation's best times in the distance races at the Razorback Invitational.
Competing in a field of 18 nationally ranked teams, many from the Southeastern Conference, the Ole Miss finished sixth out of 14 in the men's team race and the seventh of 14 on the women's side.
The No. 5-ranked host Arkansas Razorbacks won the men's team title, while No. 7 LSU claimed the women's victory. The Ole Miss men finished ahead of No. 10 USC, No. 15 Tennessee, No. 19 South Carolina, No. 17 Oklahoma State, Auburn, Mississippi State and Missouri. The Rebel women placed ahead of Auburn, No. 24 South Carolina, No. 14 Oklahoma State, No. 17 Tennessee, Mississippi State and Missouri.
The three event victories came from MJ Erb in the men's 3000 meters, Sean Tobin in the men's mile and Raven Saunders in the women's shot put, while the men's distance medley relay and Janeah Stewart in the women's weight throw were runners-up. Ole Miss athletes combined for 17 indoor personal bests overall.
Erb, coming off a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, made his indoor season debut in the 3000 meters and clocked a personal-best and NCAA-leading time of 7:54.77. He moved up to No. 2 in the school record books, just behind teammate Robert Domanic's 7:54.58 from last year's Iowa State Classic.
Tobin ran a blistering final 200 meters to cross the line in 4:00.09 and win the invitational section of the men's mile. He was just barely off his own school record of 3:59.91 that he ran as a freshman in 2014. His 4:00.09 should rank him fourth or fifth nationally this season.
Continuing the distance success, the three-time defending SEC champions in the distance medley relay ran that race for the first time this year and finished runner-up behind Oklahoma State. The squad of Domanic, Nick DeRay, Craig Engels and Tobin clocked 9:34.39 that ranks that particular quartet second all-time in school history. They should be among the NCAA's top five after the weekend concludes.
The throws groups, for both the men and women, produced points all weekend long.
Unless something strange happens, Saunders cannot be beaten in the women's shot put. The 2016 Olympian and NCAA record holder easily claimed victory with a heave of 18.47m/60-7.25, eight-and-a-half feet better than the runner-up. Teammate Janeah Stewart was third at 15.76m/51-8.5.
It was the same two, in reverse order, in the women's weight throw as Stewart placed second with a toss of 20.63m/67-8.25, while Saunders was fifth at 19.67m/64-6.5.
Dempsey McGuigan placed fourth in the men's weight throw with a mark of 19.71m/64-8, followed by teammate Kevin Conway in sixth with a heave of 19.48m/63-11.
In the women's pole vault, Lindsey Murray finished fourth among an elite lineup of vaulters with a clearance over 4.18m/13-8.5. Katy McAuley cleared a personal-best height of 3.98m/13-0.75 that moves her up to No. 4 in the school record books.
Other notable personal bests included Mary Alex England in the 3000 meters (9:30.82, 3rd in school history), Anna Braswell in the 3000 meters (9:38.79, 6th in school history) and Maddie McHugh in the 800 meters (2:09.25, 5th in school history).
Ole Miss returns to action this coming Friday and Saturday with a trip a little bit further west to Albuquerque for the New Mexico Collegiate Classic.
