Derek Johnson is an assistant director for the FedEx Student-Athlete Success Center and is the lead counselor for academic services with the Rebel football team.

Prior to coming to the University of Mississippi, Johnson served as Senior Student Success Manager for Football at University of New Mexico for the 2015 season. From 2011-2015, he oversaw the day-to-day academics support at Washington State University serving as the Coordinator of Football Academic Operations, while also working as an advisor with the women’s basketball and swimming teams. He also assisted in developing the Leadership Curriculum for all Washington State University student athletes. Johnson has also previously worked with several teams at Montana State University and San Diego State University.

Johnson earned his bachelor's degree in ethnic studies with a focus on race relations from the University of Hawaii at Manoa where he was also a member of the football team. Johnson also holds a master’s degree in educational leadership from Pennsylvania State University.

He is an active member of the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics (N4A). Johnson has been a member of the Ethnic Concerns Committee since 2008 and previously served as the Region V representative. Johnson also participated in and is a graduate of the NCAA Leadership Institute for Ethnic Minorities and Women.

Originally from Haslett, Michigan, he enjoys spending time with his family: Tess (wife), Alex (son), and Chloe and Harper (daughters).
