OXFORD, Miss. - Nine Rebel student-athletes were among 156 chosen to represent the University of Mississippi on the 2013-14 Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. The student-athletes were honored at the induction ceremony Friday afternoon at the Gertrude C. Ford Center for the Performing Arts.
Each year the University of Mississippi, along with various other colleges and universities, recognize those students who have made considerable contributions to their campus in a variety of areas, including scholarship, leadership and student activities.
"I'm very proud of the nine Who's Who student-athletes who exemplify service and academic excellence at its highest level," said senior associate athletics director Derek Cowherd. "It takes a special person to excel in college, but when you add community service and collegiate sport competition, that takes self-discipline and dedication."
The Rebels are represented in several sports, including junior Scott Weathersby from baseball, and seniors Tyler Campbell and Chase Hughes from football. Track and Field placed two with junior Alex Nichols and senior Mary Ashton Nall. Women's golf is represented by Haley Sanders, who completed her eligibility last year. Caroline Rohde-Moe of women's tennis, Abbey Stanec of rifle and Mandy McCalla of women's soccer, round out the student-athletes on the list.
"It's a great honor," Rohde-Moe said. It's nice to be rewarded not only for athletics, but for academics and community service, which I've tried to do more of these last two years, since joining the Honors College. I've become more aware of how important it is to be involved in the community."
All nine Rebel student-athletes will be listed in the national publication's 2014 edition.
