OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss senior Sofia Hellberg-Jonsen has been named to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America® women’s track and field/cross country second team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
One of the Rebels’ top female athletes on the track, Hellberg-Jonsen has also been an exceptional student over her four-year career in Oxford. The Johanneshov, Sweden native boasts a perfect 4.0 grade point average as a marketing & corporate relations major expecting to graduate in May 2014. She was a 2011 Captial One Academic All-District honoree, a two-time USTFCCCA All-Academic selection and a two-time SEC Academic Honor Roll member.
As an athlete, Hellberg-Jonsen finished her career as the fourth-best 400-meter hurdler in school history (58.99) and sixth-best indoor 800-meter runner (2:10.07). She was also a member of 4x400-meter relay units that rank second, third and sixth outdoors and second, third, fifth, sixth and ninth indoors in school history. She was an honorable mention Outdoor All-American when she participated in the 4x400 relay at the 2011 NCAA Championships.
“This is a very deserving award for a very deserving young lady,” said Ole Miss head coach Brian O’Neal. “Sofia works extremely hard on and off the track, and she’s a great role model for not only our team and community, but for all the ladies that aspire to be collegiate athletes.”
She extended her track career this summer when she was a member of Team Sweden at the 2013 European Team Championships in Dublin, Ireland. She competed in the 400-meter hurdles and helped the Swedish 4x400 relay place seventh.
Hellberg-Jonsen is the fifth Academic All-American in Ole Miss Track & Field/Cross Country history, joining Calvin Thigpen (1997, 1998, 1999), Barnabas Kirui (2007, 2011), Lee Ellis Moore (2009, 2010, 2011) and Sofie Persson (2011).
