OXFORD, Miss. – While making their 21st consecutive NCAA appearance in 2014, the Ole Miss men’s tennis team achieved great success in the classroom, earning the ITA All-Academic Team Award for the fourth year in a row and ninth time overall, as announced Thursday.

The Rebels are one of seven schools from the SEC to be named an ITA All-Academic Team.

This award honors teams with outstanding academic achievements, requiring a minimum overall 3.2 grade point average to be considered.   The Rebels posted a cumulative GPA of 3.28 for the 2013-14 year.

In addition, three Rebels were named ITA Scholar-Athletes Thursday and four made the SEC Academic Honor Roll.  The Rebels have had at least one player named an ITA Scholar-Athlete 13 straight years.

“I am very pleased with how well the team performed in the classroom this past year,” head coach Toby Hansson said. “The guys take their academics seriously and to earn the ITA All-Academic Team Award once again is something they can be very proud of. This honor is not only a reflection of the team, but the great support we receive from the university, the athletics administration and the academic staff.”

Backstrom was joined on the ITA Scholar-Athlete list by teammates William Kallberg, who will be a senior and rising sophomore Ricardo Jorge. To be eligible for ITA Scholar-Athlete recognition student-athletes must have a GPA of 3.50 or higher for the year.

Backstrom earned the honor for the third time in his career, posting a perfect 4.00 GPA for the year in managerial finance. In addition, Backstrom was named a Capital One Academic All-American, was inducted to the Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society and named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll.

Kallberg earned the honor for the first time in his career, finishing the year with a 3.89 GPA in business.  He also made the SEC Academic Honor Roll.

Jorge joined the team in January and helped lead the Rebels to the NCAA Championships, while posting a 3.60 GPA in business.

Stefan Lindmark and Joe Rogers joined Backstrom and Kallberg on the SEC Academic Honor Roll.

Ole Miss advanced to the NCAA regional final and boasted the SEC Player of the Year, Nik Scholtz. The Rebels were the only school in Division I tennis to have an All-American (Scholtz) and an Academic All-American (Backstrom).
