USC Release

OXFORD, Miss. – Demonstrating an elite level of skill not just on the pitch but also in the classroom, Ole Miss has been tabbed as a recipient of the 2016-17 United Soccer Coaches Academic Team Award. It is the seventh-consecutive year and the 13th year overall that the Rebels have earned the laurel.

The honor is rewarded to all teams that achieve at least a 3.00 cumulative GPA, however, Ole Miss went well above the cutoff mark with an impressive 3.62 GPA. That mark is the highest in the Southeastern Conference, which had 13 of 14 member schools receive the award.

“It’s certainly something that we’re very proud of,” said head coach Matt Mott. “They’re students first and we have to give a lot of credit to Jason Weathers, our academic counselor with the FedEx Student Athlete Success Center for preparing the players to be successful in the classroom. The culture of this team is that we study and get good grades. You see that from this award and certainly also from winning the Chancellor Cup over the last four years. It’s something we’re very proud of and we’re happy for the players.”

Nationwide across all levels of the NCAA, NAIA and NJCAA, a total of 813 collegiate teams (282 men, 531 women) earned the Team Academic Award.

The 24th-ranked Rebels are back in action later this evening, taking on No. 21 Tennessee in a key SEC road tilt in Knoxville, Tennessee. Kickoff from Regal Soccer Stadium is slated for 6 p.m. CT.
