NCAA Release

OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss Athletics continued its recent string of academic successes by yet again recording the highest Graduation Success Rate in school history for the fourth straight season, as evidenced by the NCAA GSR Report released on Wednesday. Ole Miss improved three percentage points to 84 percent in this most recent report.

Today’s report is the latest in a long line of recent academic milestones, including posting a cumulative 3.0 GPA across the entire department in each of the last three seasons. More than 50 percent of Ole Miss student-athletes have earned a 3.0 GPA or better each term during the past four years, and, most recently, 208 student-athletes were named to the SEC Honor Roll in 2016-17.

“Academic excellence is one of the core values for Ole Miss Athletics, and our newest Graduation Success Rate is a direct reflection of our intentional approach to increase the academic performance of our entire athletics program,” said Vice Chancellor for Intercollegiate Athletics Ross Bjork. “This new standard of improved academic success is a direct result of having recruited the right student-athletes who care just as much about academics as they do competitive athletics. I am proud of everyone who made this possible.”

Much of that success is due to the state-of-the-art FedEx Student-Athlete Success Center, run by Senior Associate Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Development Derek Cowherd and his staff,

“We are so very proud of the hard work that our student-athletes have exhibited over the past five years,” Cowherd said. “It has begun to really show dividends in graduation, a key accomplishment that we call our student-athletes’ ‘National Championship.’ The consistent upward rise in our Graduation Success Rate from 2012 from the mid-70 percent range to an overall program high of 84 percent in 2016 is a testament to the hard work of many: our University leadership, athletics administration, and total FedEx Success Center team pour their time and talents into our student-athletes, who in turn strive to be their best every day.”

Four sports earned a perfect 100 percent GSR in the latest report: rifle, women’s golf, softball and volleyball. Impressively, this is the ninth consecutive season the women’s golf team has posted a perfect GSR, as well as the seventh for volleyball and the fourth for rifle. Other Rebel teams at 90 percent or above include soccer (96), baseball (94) and women’s basketball (90).

Since 2004, Ole Miss has seen its GSR rise from 69 percent to this year’s 84, including a recent and rapid rise from 75 percent in 2012.
