FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. and SEATTLE – Competing at two of the elite indoor track meets of the season this weekend, Ole Miss athletes posted solid performances across the board at the Tyson Invitational and Husky Classic.

Between the two meets, Rebel athletes achieved 15 personal bests. These came from sprinters, distance runners and jumpers as they readied for the Feb. 27-28 SEC Championships.

Highlights on the men’s side included the high jump and triple jump at the Tyson Invitational and the mile and 5,000 meters at the Husky Classic.

Sophomore Branden Greene won the non-invitational portion of the Tyson high jump with a personal-best clearance of 7-1 that ranks him fourth in the school record books and should rank among the top 25 in the NCAA this year. Fellow sophomore Adam Aguirre placed third with a mark of 6-11.

Senior Phillip Young had another strong showing in the invitational portion of the triple jump, placing third with a distance of 52-9.5.

At the Husky Classic in Seattle, which featured many of the top distance runners in the country, Ole Miss runners held their own. Sophomore Craig Engels clocked a personal-best 4:01.19 to place 12th in the mile and remain fourth-best in school history. Fellow sophomore MJ Erb ran a personal-best 14:11.34 in the 5,000 meters to move into fourth place in the school record books. Junior Wesley Gallagher’s 14:31.89 ranks him eighth-best in school history.

The women achieved numerous personal records over the weekend, from the 200 meters all the way through to 5,000 meters.

Among the highlights was freshman Shannon Ray in the 200. Her personal-best time of 23.92 at the Tyson Invitational moves her up to No. 4 in the school record books.

All three 5,000-meter runners at Tyson ran their indoor lifetime bests, including sophomore Mary Alex England’s third-place finish in the invitational section. Her time of 16:49.86 was 16 seconds faster than her previous best and keeps her at the No. 2 spot in the school record books. Elisabeth Gaillet (17:34.11) and Saga Barzowski (18:11.63) also clocked their personal bests and rank top 10 in school history.

In Seattle, freshman Brooke Feldmeier placed 15th in the 800 meters with another strong time of 2:06.93. Junior Britt Ummels made her 800-meter debut for the Rebels and clocked a 2:08.32 that ranks her third in school history.

Britt’s twin sister, Bo Ummels, ran a season-best 9:52.63 in the 3,000 meters that moves her up to sixth in school history.

The SEC Indoor Championships will be held Feb. 27-28 in Lexington, Kentucky.
