AUBURN, Ala. – Shelby Brown and the Ole Miss women’s distance runners keep making history.
They did so again Friday, the first day of the War Eagle Invitational at the Hutsell-Rosen Track in Auburn.
Brown, a junior from Phoenix, Arizona, raced to a third-place finish and a school-record time of 4:19.09 in the 1500 meters. It was a 10-second improvement on her previous personal best from 2015 and ranks her among the top 40 in the NCAA this year. Britt Ummels previously set the school record with her time of 4:19.21 at last year’s NCAA East Preliminary.
This is Brown’s fifth school record of the 2017 calendar year. She has also broken the all-time Ole Miss marks in the indoor mile, indoor 3000 meters, indoor distance medley relay and outdoor 3000-meter steeplechase.
Ole Miss athletes have now broken six school records a total of nine times this outdoor season.
All three of the Rebel women who ran the 1500 Friday night clocked impressive personal bests. Sophomore Maddie McHugh finished fifth in 4:21.13 for a 12-second PR and the No. 3 position in school history. Junior Anna Braswell placed seventh in 4:24.40 to lower her PR by six seconds and move up to No. 6 in the school record books.
Other third-place results on Friday by the No. 18 Ole Miss women were from Lanae Newsome in the triple jump (12.08m/39-7.75), Janeah Stewart in the hammer throw (60.71m/199-2) and Alex Enright in the javelin (41.00m/134-6).
Volunteer assistant coach Gwen Berry, the current world leader in the hammer throw, had another strong outing, winning the event with a facility-record mark of 74.54m/244-7. That’s her second-best effort of the year and still farther than any other woman in the world in 2017.
For the 13th-ranked Rebel men, senior Dempsey McGuigan led the way by winning the hammer throw with a distance of 67.14m/220-3, almost 28 feet farther than the runner-up.
Wesley Gallagher was fifth in the 1500 meters with a personal-best 3:47.02, lowering his previous best set in 2014. Peyton Moss also notched a personal best in the javelin with his throw of 49.53m/162-6, good for 13th in school history.
Events begin Saturday at 11:30 a.m. CT and run through 4:45 p.m. Ole Miss athletes will look for more times and marks that could move them up in the conference, regional and national discussions.
