BATON ROUGE, La. – Ole Miss sophomore Fabia McDonald had a nice first day of competition to get things started for the Rebels at the 2012 Southeastern Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

After the first four events of the women’s heptathlon, McDonald is in sixth place with 3,215 points, while her teammate and fellow sophomore Mary Ashton Nall is in 10th place with 2,865.

Highlighting the day was McDonald’s personal-best 5-8 in the high jump, which tied her for second among the SEC competitors. She now ranks seventh in school history in the high jump. Nall posted a personal-best 34-6.25 in the shot put.

McDonald, who currently ranks 13th in the nation in the heptathlon, placed fifth in the pentathlon with a school-record 4,005 points at this year’s SEC indoor meet. Nall finished sixth in the heptathlon at last year’s SEC outdoor meet.

The Rebel duo will compete in the final three heptathlon events on Friday, beginning at 2:15 p.m. Several other event prelims will run from 6-7:30 p.m., including Ole Miss standouts Isiah Young in the 200 meters (6:50), Sofia Hellberg-Jonsen in the 400-meter hurdles (7:10) and Carson Blanks in the 400-meter hurdles (7:25).
