LEXINGTON, Ky. – On the middle day of the NCAA East Preliminary, Ole Miss athletes punched three more tickets to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships (June 7-10 in Eugene, Oregon).

Through two days of the preliminary meet at the University of Kentucky’s track & field complex, four Rebels have combined for five NCAA berths, while several others have qualified for Saturday quarterfinals of running events.

Junior Janeah Stewart got things started Friday by qualifying for her second event in two days. The Calumet City, Illinois, native had the fifth-best discus throw out of 48 competitors, twirling it 55.10m/180-9. She also punched her ticket in the hammer throw Thursday and will compete in the shot put Saturday.

Stewart is the first Ole Miss woman to ever qualify for nationals in the discus.

Fellow junior Shelby Brown also made history for the Rebel women Friday. She earned the 12th and final NCAA berth in the 3000-meter steeplechase when she broke her own school record with a time of 10:06.67, becoming the first Ole Miss woman to qualify for nationals in the steeple.

Brown, from Phoenix, Arizona, advances to the NCAA Championships for the first time in her career. She has now broken the Ole Miss steeplechase record three times this year and has set a school record in five total events, indoor and outdoor, in 2017.

Senior MJ Erb kept his fantastic postseason going by winning his heat of the steeplechase and advancing to Eugene. His season-best time of 8:36.93 was fifth-best on the day in Lexington. The SEC steeplechase and 5000-meter champion returns to NCAAs for the second straight year after placing eighth in the steeple a season ago for first team All-America honors.

It was heartbreak for junior Ryan Manahan in the 800 meter quarterfinals, though. With the top 12 advancing to Eugene, Manahan came in 13th with a time of 1:48.51, just 0.18 of a second away from a trip to nationals with his teammates.

Sophomore Maddie McHugh was 15th in the women’s 800 meter quarterfinals, running 2:06.37.

Ole Miss has entries in the following events on Saturday, the final day of the NCAA East Preliminary: women’s 4x100m relay, men’s 1500m, women’s 5000m, men’s 5000m, women’s 4x400m relay, men’s discus and women’s shot put.
