EUGENE, Ore. – On the final day of the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Ole Miss junior Janeah Stewart made the discus final and placed ninth as the Rebels capped a memorable season.

For the meet, Ole Miss scored nine points to finish in a tie for 29th in the women’s team standings. Oregon won the women’s competition with 64 points, defeating Georgia (62.2) in the final moments of the 4x400-meter relay. Next in line were USC (43), Kentucky (40) and Florida (39).

The men’s competition that came down to the wire Friday was won by Florida (61.5) over Texas A&M (59.5), followed by Virginia (36), Arkansas (33) and Auburn (24). Ole Miss secured its fourth-best men’s finish ever with a tie for 14th (16).

Stewart made her second final of the week Saturday, having already placed fifth in Thursday’s shot put competition. Her best discus throw of the day, 54.81m/179-10, placed her ninth.

An NCAA newcomer after transferring to Ole Miss from Iowa Central Community College, Stewart placed top 10 in all three of her events in Eugene, including a 10th-place finish in the hammer throw Thursday. She is the first Ole Miss woman to make NCAAs in three throwing events, and she posted the program’s best NCAA results in both the discus and hammer.

Junior Raven Saunders placed fourth in the shot put Thursday, giving Ole Miss a total of four All-America honors for the week. First team All-America accolades are awarded to the 1-8 finishers in each event, while 9-16 finishers receive second-team distinction.

“It wasn’t a great week for them, but I’m still proud,” head coach Connie Price-Smith said. “Janeah competed and made finals in both the shot and the discus. Shelby (Brown) had her first experience here (in the steeplechase) and will hopefully be back next year. Raven just needs to get back into competition shape, and she’ll be ready to go.”

The 2016-17 Ole Miss Athletics season is over, but several Rebel track & field athletes will continue their season this summer at the U.S. Championships (June 23-25 in Sacramento, California) and if they advance, then the IAAF World Championships (Aug. 5-13 in London, U.K.).
