Stewart Named SEC Women’s Field Athlete of the Week
Feb. 7, 2017

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Ole Miss junior Janeah Stewart has been named the Southeastern Conference Women’s Field Athlete of the Week after a breakthrough performance in the weight throw and shot put at last weekend’s New Mexico Classic.

Stewart tied her own school record and personal best in the weight throw with a heave of 21.86m/71-8.75 that won the competition in Albuquerque on Friday. With that mark, the transfer from Iowa Central Community College ranks No. 3 in the NCAA this year.

She followed up her PR on Friday with a huge PR in the shot put on Saturday, placing second in New Mexico (behind NCAA leader and teammate Raven Saunders) with a mark of 16.81m/55-2 that ranks her No. 11 in the NCAA and No. 31 in the world in 2017.

The Calumet City, Illinois, native remains No. 2 on the school record charts in the shot put, two-and-a-half feet ahead of the No. 3 shot putter in school history.

She has accomplished all of these feats in just four meets as a member of the Ole Miss team.

Stewart is the second Rebel to earn an SEC weekly award this year, joining Saunders, who was Women’s Field Athlete of the Week on January 17.

Other SEC award winners on this week were Tennessee’s Christian Coleman as men’s runner, Kentucky’s Tim Duckworth as men’s field, Texas A&M’s Devin Dixon as men’s freshman, A&M’s Danyel White as women’s runner and Tennessee’s Domonique Turner as women’s freshman.
