BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After an incredible outdoor season opener, Ole Miss sophomore Raven Saunders was named Southeastern Conference Women’s Field Athlete of the Week on Tuesday.

Making her outdoor debut for the Rebels, Saunders shattered a bevy of records with wins in both the shot put and discus at the Alabama Relays.

In the shot put, she heaved the ball 18.75m/61-6.25, setting an outdoor personal best along with a meet record, facility record and school record. It’s the best outdoor shot put ever by an SEC woman and moves her up to No. 7 on the all-time outdoor collegiate list. She bested her previous outdoor personal best of 18.35m/60-2.5 that won her the NCAA outdoor title last year while a freshman at Southern Illinois. No. 1 on the early NCAA outdoor list, she enters the 2016 world outdoor rankings at No. 2 in the early part of this Olympic year.

Not as well known for the discus, Saunders made a big statement with a throw of 56.85m/186-6, which also was a personal best that set meet, facility and school records. She ranks fourth in the NCAA in the discus with a massive improvement over her previous personal best of 51.21m/168-0 from last year.

Saunders broke both records on her sixth and final throw of each event in Tuscaloosa.

She earns her first SEC weekly honor of the outdoor season after being named SEC Women’s Field Athlete of the Week four times during the indoor season.
