OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss women’s tennis senior Caroline Rohde-Moe and former track and field standout Sofia Hellberg-Jonsen were among 70 students honored with a Taylor Medal at the annual Honors Convocation Thursday night at the Ford Center for Performing Arts.

The Taylor Medal is the highest academic honor a student can receive at the University of Mississippi.    Both Rohde-Moe and Hellberg-Jonsen received a Taylor Medal in the School of Business Administration.

The Taylor Medal recognizes outstanding academic performance and is given to no more than one percent of the student body. To be considered, a student must have a grade-point average of at least a 3.90.

“Sophia and Caroline exemplify the true meaning of the term ‘scholar-athlete,’” said senior associate athletics director Derek Cowherd.  “Being honored as a Taylor Medalist is a significant achievement for any student, let alone a student-athlete.  We are so very proud of their accomplishments both academically and while competing for the University of Mississippi.”

Rohde-Moe, a two-time All-SEC honoree, has helped lead the Rebels to the NCAA Championships each of her years, including a final ranking of No. 18 in the nation in 2012.  The Honors College member boasts a 3.94 GPA in Managerial Finance.   Rohde-Moe is a two-time ITA Scholar-Athlete and a two-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll.  She was the recipient of the ITA Southern Region Arthur Ashe Jr., Sportsmanship and Leadership Award in 2013, and this year was named to the Who’s Who Among Colleges and Universities.

“We are very proud of Caroline on her latest academic accomplishment,” head coach Mark Beyers said.  “To be one of only a select few in the entire student population at Ole Miss to receive a Taylor Medal is a tremendous achievement.  Caroline is an outstanding young lady whose dedication and hard work on and off the court is phenomenal. She represents what we strive for in our program.”

Hellberg-Jonsen finished her career in 2013 as one of the top hurdlers in school history. She ranks fourth in the Ole Miss record books in the 400-meter hurdles (58.99) and is also in the top 10 in the indoor 400 and 800 meters. In 2011, she earned honorable mention All-America distinction as a member of the Rebels’ 4x400-meter relay squad and was part of the school-record distance medley relay and the No. 2 4x400 relay team in school history.

“We’re extremely proud of Sofia for receiving such a prestigious honor,” head coach Brian O’Neal said. “She represented Ole Miss in a first-class way both on and off the track. To have a 4.0 in our school of business in addition to competing at a high level in the best track and field conference in America, shows that with hard work and dedication, the highest levels can be achieved.”

The Taylor Memorial was founded by William A. Taylor in June 1904. He founded the award in memory of his son, Marcus Elvis Taylor, an honored alumnus of the class of 1871, and out of benevolent regard and good will for the youth of the state and the interest and the work of the University of Mississippi, and for the encouragement of meritorious scholarship deportment.

The Taylor Memorial, as well as the other awards presented to the students, is chosen by a committee of faculty and staff members.
