Ole Miss Meet Notes

OXFORD, Miss. – The fourth weekend of the Ole Miss Rebels’ 2017 outdoor track & field season is a big one, as they go toe to toe with many of the country’s top teams, athletes and professionals at the 59th annual Mt. SAC Relays in Torrance, California this week.

The Mt. SAC Relays will be held Thursday-Saturday on the campus of El Camino College, a temporary home for the meet while the Mt. SAC facility in Walnut, California, is undergoing renovations.

Thursday evening’s events will include the 10,000 meters and hammer throws, while Friday and Saturday will feature the majority of events all day long. The meet will be streamed live on and the FloSports app beginning at 5:45 p.m. CT on Thursday and all day Friday and Saturday.

Nationally ranked men’s teams sending athletes to Mt. SAC include No. 2 Texas A&M, No. 3 Oregon, No. 4 Alabama, No. 6 Arkansas, No. 8 LSU, No. 10 Texas Tech, No. 11 USC, No. 13 Stanford, No. 14 Ole Miss, No. 16 Nebraska, No. 18 UCLA, No. 21 Western Kentucky and No. 25 Colorado State.

Nationally ranked women’s teams sending athletes to Mt. SAC include No. 1 Oregon, No. 2 Arkansas, No. 4 LSU, No. 5 USC, No. 8 Texas A&M, No. 11 Stanford, No. 13 Washington, No. 14 Harvard, No. 18 Alabama, No. 22 Nebraska, No. 23 Purdue and No. 24 Oklahoma.

Ole Miss is also sending several athletes to the Bryan Clay Invitational (Azusa, California) and Beach Invitational (Long Beach, California) over the three days. Notably, there will be an elite-level 1500-meter competition at the Bryan Clay on Friday night that will include Rebels Craig Engels and Ryan Manahan, among others.

For the first time this season, Ole Miss has entered most of its men and women in their primary events, which should result in some big marks against such high-level competition.

Head Coach Connie Price-Smith Says:

“Mt. SAC will be a big meet for us. We'll run our athletes in their main events. There will be lots of competition, so we're looking for a lot of big marks to come out of that. The progression is going well as we get ready for SEC Championships.”

  • The Ole Miss men are 14th and the women are 15th in this week’s USTFCCCA national rankings, marking the first time in school history that both squads are ranked in the top 15 at the same time ... The women equaled their best outdoor ranking in program history (finished 15th in 2008).
  • Ole Miss returns to the Mt. SAC Relays for the first time since 2014 ... The Rebels competed at the event for four straight years from 1999-2002, as well as 1997 and 1996 ... Teneeshia Jones’ school record of 22.97 in the women’s 200m from the 2001 Mt. SAC Relays still stands.
  • Head coach Connie Price-Smith, who served as Team USA women’s head coach in Rio and was elected to the USATF Hall of Fame in 2016, is in her second season at the Ole Miss helm.
  • Through the outdoor season’s first three weekends, Ole Miss athletes have broken a school record five times.
  • Ole Miss athletes top the SEC in three different events - men’s discus (Brian Williams), women’s shot put (Raven Saunders) and women’s discus (Janeah Stewart).
  • JUCO transfer Brian Williams has broken the Ole Miss discus record in three straight weekends ... He won the Tennessee Relays discus with a throw of 61.13m/200-7 that ranks him No. 3 in the NCAA this year.
  • Williams is undefeated in all three discus competitions this season.
  • Craig Engels currently ranks sixth in the NCAA and 12th in the world in the 800m this year (1:46.96).
  • Dempsey McGuigan is No. 7 nationally in the hammer throw with a mark of 69.45m/227-10.
  • Raven Saunders holds the national and world lead in the shot put (18.51m/60-8.75) from the Joe Walker Invitational ... She was a 2016 Bowerman Finalist and Rio Olympian, as well as the SEC and NCAA outdoor shot put champion last year, setting meet records at both championships.
  • JUCO transfer Janeah Stewart has set PRs in shot put, discus and hammer this spring, ranking top eight in the NCAA in all three ... She has broken the Ole Miss hammer throw record twice ... Her shot put PR of 17.86m/58-7.25 at the Tennessee Relays is No. 4 in the NCAA and No. 7 in the world this year.
  • Ole Miss had a great showing at the 2017 NCAA Indoor Championships, with the women tying for 12th (best in school history) and the men tying for 16th ... Raven Saunders won the NCAA shot put crown and broke her own collegiate record with a massive effort of 19.56m/64-2.25, while Ole Miss won its first relay national title with the DMR squad of Craig Engels, Nick DeRay, Sean Tobin and Robert Domanic.
