NEW ORLEANS
– After a successful weekend at home at the Joe Walker Invite, Ole Miss women’s track & field remained within the national top-25 for the 14th-straight outdoor release – coming in at No. 24 in the latest USTFCCCA National Computer Rankings.

Those 14 consecutive outdoor top-25 rankings date back to Rebel head coach Connie Price-Smith’s first season in 2016. During her tenure at Ole Miss, the Rebel women have been ranked in 17 of the 24 total rankings releases outdoors. This year, Ole Miss opened at No. 22 in the women’s preseason rankings – the highest preseason outdoor ranking for the Rebel women since the USTFCCCA began the national rankings in 2008.

Ole Miss also made a big jump in the USTFCCCA’s #EventSquad rankings on both the men’s and women’s side, which takes the average of the top-four times or marks in an event from each school and assembles a rankings list. On the men’s side, the Rebel men’s distance runners helped launch Ole Miss up to No. 2 in the men’s 1500-meter rankings (3:43.63 average) and No. 4 in the men’s 800-meter rankings (1:49.53 average), while on the women’s side the Rebels moved up to No. 5 in the hammer throw (58.76m/192-09 average) and No. 8 in the 400-meter (54.43 average).

Ole Miss currently owns 11 women’s marks or times within the national top-50 – with senior All-American thrower Janeah Stewart owning three by herself. Stewart, who is contributing 57.43 of the total 80.50 points the Rebel women are receiving, was the top collegian in all three of her events this past weekend at the Joe Walker Invite, winning the shot put and discus at new season-bests.

Stewart, one of just two to triple at the national meet in 2017 alongside Arizona State’s Maggie Ewen, is also one of two in the nation to currently rank within the top-19 in the shot, discus and hammer (the other being Ewen, who leads the NCAA in all three). Stewart currently ranks fourth nationally in the hammer (67.70m/222-01), sixth in the shot put (17.64m/57-10.50) and 19th in the discus (54.78m/179-09).

A pair of senior Rebel sprinters also have their hand in multiple events. Shannon Ray (100-meter, 11.25) and Jolie Carbo (400-meter, 52.87) both rank 18th in the nation in their marquee events, and both have run the back-half on two top-50 4x100-meter relays that rank 18th (44.10) and 32nd (44.61) in the NCAA.

Other Rebel women ranking within the national top-50 include: Maddie McHugh in the 800-meter (16th, 2:06.12), Lindsey Murray in the pole vault (16th, 4.18m/13-08.50), Shelby Brown in the 1500-meter (26th, 4:20.47) and Kieshonna Brooks in the heptathlon (35th, 5,057).

The Rebel men moved up three spots this week to No. 37 nationally, thanks to a boost from a superb weekend on the track from the middle-distance runners. Freshman Waleed Suliman opened his outdoor season at a blazing overall career-best in the 800-meter at 1:47.29 – currently the fastest time in the nation by a freshman and fifth overall in the NCAA.

It was a similar story in the men’s 1500-meter the night prior, where senior Robert Domanic helped lead five Rebels to likely East Regional qualifying times. Domanic won at 3:42.32, putting him No. 8 in the NCAA. Other NCAA top-50 times from that race came from senior Sean Tobin (12th, 3:42.82), freshman Cade Bethmann (29th, 3:44.56) and senior Trevor Gilley (35th, 3:44.81).

Senior All-American Brian Williams still ranks within the top-25 nationally in both of his marquee throwing events, sitting third in the discus at 61.20m (200-09) and 23rd in the shot put at 18.67m (61-03.00).

Other Rebel men within the NCAA top-50 include: Allen Gordon in both the high jump (23rd, 2.16m/7-01.00) and long jump (39th, 7.62m/25-00.00), and Cullen Prena in the discus (25th, 56.28m/184-08).

Ole Miss will split squad for three separate meets this upcoming weekend. The Rebel distance runners will head back to California for both the Mt. SAC Relays and the Bryan Clay Invite, while the rest of the team will head to Auburn for the War Eagle Invite.
