NCAA East Preliminary Entries/Heat Sheets/Results

OXFORD, Miss. –
There will be a Red and Blue theme at the preliminary round of the 2017 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships next week. The NCAA accepted an unprecedented 34 entries between the Ole Miss men's and women's teams.

The NCAA East Preliminary Round will be held next weekend, May 25-27, at the University of Kentucky Outdoor Track & Field Complex in Lexington.

There will be 32 Rebel athletes - 10 men and a school-record 22 women - competing in 22 different events at the prelims, including 2017 SEC champions Craig Engels (men’s 1500m), MJ Erb (men’s 3000m steeplechase) and Brian Williams (men’s discus).

Under the direction of second-year head coach Connie Price-Smith, Ole Miss breaks last year’s school record for entries with 34 and ties last year’s school record with 32 athletes accepted to the East Preliminary since the NCAA adopted its current preliminary round format in 2010.

The NCAA Selection Committee accepted the top 48 performers in each individual event (after coaches’ and medical scratches) and the top 24 relay teams in both relays to compete at each site hosting the NCAA Preliminary Rounds for a total of 96 individuals and 48 relays competing in each event nationwide. The West Preliminary Round is being held in Austin, Texas.

The top 12 finishers in each event at the regional will qualify for the national semifinal and final rounds of the 2017 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships to be held June 8-11 at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.

Last year, Ole Miss produced a school-record 13 outdoor All-Americans, as all 13 athletes it sent to the NCAAs placed top 16 in their events.

Entering next weekend, three Rebels ranks No. 1 in the East region in their top events – Engels in the men’s 1500 meters, Williams in the men’s discus and Raven Saunders in the women’s shot put. Janeah Stewart, who won the SEC Commissioner’s Trophy as the top scorer at the conference meet, ranks top seven in the region in three different events – shot put, discus and hammer throw.

Returning to the NCAA Preliminary Round on the men’s side are Barclay Angle, Kevin Conway, Engels, Erb, Wesley Gallagher, Derek Gutierrez, Ryan Manahan and Dempsey McGuigan. Women who have competed at the prelims before are Emily Bean, Jolie Carbo, Hannah Christen, Mary Alex England, Nicole Henderson, Mercedes Mattix, Katy McAuley, Aisha Newsome, Shannon Ray, Saunders, Breanna Tate and Deanna Tate.
