EUGENE, Ore. -- His impact on the Ole Miss distance running program has been undeniable, and on Monday assistant coach Ryan Vanhoy earned the distinction of 2015 South Region Men's Outdoor Track & Field Assistant Coach of the Year from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

The regional award winners were determined by a vote of USTFCCCA member coaches.

In his second year with the Rebels, Vanhoy has helped guide the men's distance program into uncharted territory. Among the Rebels' school-record 14 entries at the NCAA Outdoor Championships are 1500-meter runners Robert Domanic and Trevor Gilley, who are the first Rebels to ever qualify for nationals in the event. Additionally, Craig Engels ranks top 10 in the nation in the 1500, but will compete in the 800 in Oregon.

In the Ole Miss outdoor record books, current Rebel men own four of the top six spots in the 1500 and three of the top 10 in the 5000. The 1500 is particularly strong, led by school record holder Engels at 3:40.28, with Sean Tobin in second at 3:42.07 and Domanic third in 3:43.75.

The Rebels' outdoor success was preceded by record-breaking cross country and indoor seasons. In the fall, Ole Miss matched the best SEC cross country finish in school history (runners-up), while they advanced to the NCAA Cross Country Championships for the first time ever. Vanhoy's group of men's milers and distance medley relay had a huge SEC indoor meet to help Ole Miss place fourth in the team standings for its best finish in 31 years.

The last Ole Miss assistant coach to win such an award was O'Neal, who was named the 2008 South Region Women's Indoor Assistant Coach of the Year. He was also the 2009 National Men's Indoor Assistant Coach of the Year while at Florida.
