Cross Country Back In Action This Weekend
Sept. 29, 2016

OXFORD, Miss. –  After a two-week hiatus, the Ole Miss cross country teams will be back in action Friday, September 30, when they travel to South Bend, Indiana, for the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational.

The Rebels will be back in action for the first time since their sweep of the inaugural Rebel Invite on September 9 in Oxford.  Since then the Rebel men have climbed as high as No. 18 in the USTFCCCA Coaches’ Poll and currently sit at No. 20. The women have been receiving votes during that time.

Coach Ryan Vanhoy believes that “Notre Dame is a great meet with a lot of top-notch competition.”

That competition comes in the form of five other ranked opponents on the men’s side, No. 9 Eastern Kentucky, No. 12 Wisconsin, No. 18 UTEP, No. 23 North Carolina State and No. 24 Washington State, along with fellow SEC opponents Alabama and Texas A&M.

The women’s field will feature six ranked teams, No. 1 Providence, No. 3 New Mexico, No. 5 North Carolina State, No. 16 Notre Dame, No. 24 fellow SEC opponent Vanderbilt and No. 28 Utah, along with other SEC opponents Alabama and Texas A&M.

The Rebels will run 12 men and 12 women in South Bend, highlighted on the men’s side by seniors Robert Domanic, Craig Engels, Wesley Gallagher and MJ Erb, who will be running in his first meet of 2016.

The women will feature junior Hannah Christen and freshman Anna Elkin. Christen was the women’s 5K champion at the Rebel Invite in her first race after transferring to Ole Miss from North Carolina during the offseason. Elkin earned SEC Women’s Freshman Runner of the Week distinction after her performance at the Rebel Invite.

“Both squads are looking forward to competing in South Bend and are aiming to take another step forward as we head toward the championship season,” Vanhoy added.

The women’s 5K will begin at 1 p.m. CST with the men’s 5-mile race beginning at 1:45 p.m. CST.
