Trio Of Former Players Assume New Roles With Rebel Baseball

Beam, Head And Smith Take On New Roles With Ole Miss Program

After two seasons as the Director of Baseball Operations for the Ole Miss baseball program, Fuller Smith returns to the field in a coaching position for the 2013 season with his transition into the role of volunteer assistant coach.

In his new role with the Rebels, Smith will coach the outfielders, assist Cliff Godwin in coaching the hitters and serve as the first base coach.

Smith joined the Ole Miss baseball staff prior to the 2011 season as the Director of Baseball Operations after having been a volunteer assistant at the University of Texas at Arlington for the 2010 season.

At UT-Arlington, Smith served primarily as the team's first-base coach, hitting instructor and outfield coach.

Smith helped coach UT-Arlington to a school record 19 conference wins in 2010 and also helped in the development of outfielders Michael Choice and Preston Buck. That season, Choice earned several accolades, including First Team College All-America honors, Southland Conference Player of the Year honors and was named a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award.

That same season, Buck was named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball.

As the Director of Operations for Ole Miss, Smith was responsible for many of the day-to-day functions of the Rebel baseball program, including travel arrangements, budget management, equipment inventory, on-campus recruiting and assisting with the management of the Bullpen Club.

Smith joined the UT Arlington baseball coaching staff after completing his collegiate playing career at Ole Miss. He was a model of consistency at the plate during his senior season (2008) batting .332 (69-for-208) with 39 runs scored, 14 doubles, seven home runs and 32 RBI. He was second on the Rebels in batting and ranked among team leaders with a .500 slugging percentage, .414 on-base percentage and was solid in the outfield committing only one error on the season.

Smith was a main contributor on the Rebels' 2008 squad that finished 39-26 overall and ended its season in the NCAA Coral Gables Regional Final against top-ranked Miami (Fla.). Smith also played his junior season at Ole Miss where he started 30 games and helped the Rebels - who hosted the 2007 NCAA Oxford Regional - to the NCAA Super Regional in Tempe against Arizona State.

For his career, Smith hit .302 with 58 runs scored, 49 RBI and eight home runs. He played in 117 games over his two years in Oxford, starting 79 of those games.

Prior to his playing time at Ole Miss, Smith was a two-year letter winner at Hill Junior College where he batted .403 with five home runs and 39 RBI in 2006. He fielded .998 during his sophomore season and was named second team All-Conference.

Smith was a .416 career hitter at Vestavia Hills High School where he earned honorable mention All-State as a senior. He was also named Super All-Metro and Class 6A All-Metro.

Smith married the former Whitney Ryon on June 28, 2008.
