Rolison Tabbed to USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award Watch List
Feb. 9, 2018

OXFORD, Miss. – Sophomore lefty Ryan Rolison has been named to the 2018 Golden Spikes Award Watch List, USA Baseball announced Friday. Rolison is the first Rebel Baseball player to earn the preseason honor since Christian Trent did it back in 2015.

Since 1978, USA Baseball has honored the top amateur baseball player in the country with the Golden Spikes Award. The award is sponsored by Major League Baseball and presented in partnership with the Rod Dedeaux Foundation. It is presented each year to the player who best exhibits exceptional on-field ability and exemplary sportsmanship.

Rolison is one of 55 players on the preseason watch list, and is one of 15 players from the Southeastern Conference. Of those, nine are pitchers, including Rolison.

The southpaw, already named a preseason all-American by four different outlets – Baseball America, Perfect Game, D1Baseball and College Sports Madness – enters his sophomore campaign as one of the most highly-touted players in all of college baseball. Rolison checks in as high as No. 2 in D1Baseball’s Top 100 Draft prospects, and is scattered extremely high among other draft projections.

The Jackson, Tennessee, native is coming off a Freshman All-America season in which he also landed SEC All-Freshman honors after being inserted into the rotation for the final eight weekends of 2017. He finished the year 6-3 with a 3.06 ERA and struck out 64 batters in 61.2 innings of work.

Rolison is the first Rebel in three years to land on the Golden Spikes Award Watch List after Christian Trent, now in the Brewers organization, made the same list in 2015. Chris Ellis, a member of the St. Louis Cardinals organization, also earned a spot on the semifinalist list in May of 2014.

Approximately halfway through the 2018 season, USA Baseball officials and the Golden Spikes Award Advisory Board will release the 40-player midseason watch list. A few weeks later, USA Baseball officials will trim the number of players down and release the 25 semifinalists. The list of semifinalists will then be sent to a voting body consisting of past USA Baseball National Team coaches and press officers, members of the media that closely follow the amateur game, select professional baseball personnel and former Golden Spikes Award winners, representing a group of more than 200 total voters. As part of this selection process, all voters will be asked to choose three players from the list of semifinalists. In June, USA Baseball will announce the finalists, and voting for the winner will begin that same day.

The 2018 USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award will be presented Thursday, June 28, on ESPN's "SportsCenter." Following the nationally televised announcement of the winner, the finalists and their families will be celebrated at the Jonathan Club Los Angeles as part of the 2018 Rod Dedeaux Foundation Awards Dinner.
