Short Named to NCBWA Stopper of the Year Watch List
Wyatt Short, an All-SEC honoree in 2015, is listed as one of the nation's top closers heading into the 2016 season
Feb. 15, 2016

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Ole Miss closer Wyatt Short was named to the preseason watch list for the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Stopper of the Year Award, given annually to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball. The organization, who also named Short second team NCBWA Preseason All-America, made the announcement Monday afternoon.

Short is one of 10 players on the watch list that also collected NCBWA Preseason All-America honors. The junior is only one of 15 closers on the list to eclipse double digits in saves last season.

A native of Southaven, Mississippi, Short earned the NCBWA accolades after a dominating 2015 season in which he earned All-SEC honors as the Rebels’ closer. The southpaw posted a 4-1 record with a 1.38 ERA as a sophomore, striking out 44 hitters over 39.0 innings. He added 10 saves as the team’s shutdown reliever, tying for the fifth-most saves in a single season in school history. At one point during the season, (March 1-April 18), Short surrendered just one run over 21.2 innings spanning 12 appearances.

In just two years, Short has collected 13 saves to sit in a tie with Skipper Wright for sixth in the Ole Miss Baseball record book. The lefty has made 23 appearances in each of his first two seasons donning the Rebel jersey, boasting an impressive 1.92 career ERA. On the mound, Short is holding opposing hitters to a .194 average at the plate to go along with 78 career strikeouts in 70.1 innings of work.

Short and the Rebels begin their season this week, hosting Florida International for a three-game series at Swayze Field, Feb. 19-21.
