OLE MISS QUICK HITS Ole Miss moved into the top 10 of all five of the national polls following a 5-0 week and a sweep of Lipscomb this past weeked. The Rebels are ranked as high as No. 6 (Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball) and are ranked 8th in the remaining three polls (Perfect Game, USAToday, NCBWA). Ole Miss has won nine-straight after dropping the only game of the season against Memphis on February 26. Mike Bianco became the all-time wins leader at Ole Miss with Saturday's win over Lipscomb. He has 487 wins for his time at Ole Miss and passes Rebel legend Jake Gibbs to take over the top spot on the coaching list. Junior C Stuart Turner was named to the Bench Award watch list on Monday as one of the top catchers nationally. Turner leads the SEC in batting average (.491), slugging percentage (.800) and RBI (27) through four weeks. Ole Miss is coming off a series sweep of Lipscomb thanks to a five-run seventh inning rally on Sunday. The sweep gave the Rebels four straight sweeps to open a season for the first time since 2004. The 16-1 start to the season is also two games shy of the Rebels 18-1 start in 2004 that was the best start to a season in the Bianco era and one of the best starts in school history. Preston Overbey and Auston Bousfield hit their first home runs of the season over the weekend against Lipscomb.
PROBABLE PITCHING MATCHUPS TUESDAY, 6:00 PM ULM - Cale Wine, Sr., RHP Ole Miss - Josh Laxer, Soph., RHP NOTING LAXER: Laxer makes his third start of the season when he takes the mound against ULM on Tuesday night. The sophomore is 1-0 on the season with a 1.35 ERA after picking up the win against SELA last Tuesday night. The win over SELA was a shutout for the Rebels, the third on the season for Ole Miss. Laxer also made a start against Memphis and took no decision in the outing after leaving the game with the lead. For the season, Laxer has allowed three runs on 10 hits with seven walks and three strikeouts through 13.1 IP.
WEDNESDAY, 6:00 PM ULM - TBA Ole Miss - Brady Bramlett, Fr., RHP NOTING BRAMLETT: Bramlett makes his third start of the season when he takes the mound at ULM on Wednesday night. The freshman is 2-0 on the year with wins over UA-Pine Bluff and Southeastern Louisiana in his last two starts. In his two starts, Bramlett has worked 10.0 innings and allowed one run with four walks and nine strikeouts. Opponents are hitting at a .200 clip against Bramlett while he has tallied a 0.82 ERA through his three outings.
REBELS vs. LOUISIANA-MONROE Ole Miss and Louisiana-Monroe will face each other in a pair of midweek games on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week to mark the first meeting between the two teams since the 2010 season. That year, the Rebels opened the season with a series win over the Warhawks, coming back to claim the final two games of the series after dropping game one 6-5 on Friday night. Ole Miss and ULM have faced-off 37 times in the history of the two teams with Ole Miss leading 26-10-1. ULM is coming off a series loss at the hands of Northwestern State this past weekend. Taylor Abdalla leads the Warhawks at the plate with a .353 average, three home runs and eight RBI. ULM is hitting .273 as a team with 82 runs scored and 10 home runs this season. Warhawk pitchers hold a team ERA of 3.68 with 87 strikeouts and 44 walks through 132.0 innings of work.
TURNER NAMED TO BENCH AWARD WATCH LIST Junior Stuart Turner has been named to the initial watch list for the 2013 Bench Award by the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission, it was announced on Monday. The Bench Award is presented annually to the nation's top catcher and the initial list is comprised of 48 players to watch.
REBELS SWEEP FOUR STRAIGHT WEEKENDS TO OPEN SEASON When the Rebels picked up a series sweep over Rhode Island on Sunday, February 24, it gave the Rebels series sweeps in back-to-back weekends to open the season. It's the first time the Rebels have opened the year with back-to-back series sweeps since the 2008 season when the Rebels swept Minnesota and Indiana State to open the season.
Ole Miss continued the sweeps in the third weekend of play at Florida International, sweeping the Panthers in a three-game set. The Rebels followed it up with a sweep of Lipscomb in week four. It marks the first time Ole Miss had posted four consecutive weekend sweeps to open the season since the 2004 campaign.
MULTIPLE-HIT AND MULTIPLE-RBI GAMES Stuart Turner does a little bit of everything for the Rebels and currently leads the team in multiple-hit games and multiple-RBI games. To date, Turner has posted 11 multiple-hit games and nine multiple-RBI games. Ten Rebels have posted multiple-hit games in 2012, while eight different Rebels have posted multiple-RBI games this season. Austin Anderson is right behind Turner with seven multiple-hit games, while Auston Bousfield has added six multiple-hit games this season. Will Jamison has posted five multiple-hit games so far this year.
THROUGH 17 GAMES IN 2012 Through 17 games in the 2012 season, the Rebels were two games behind the current pace in 2013 with a 14-3 record on the season and coming off a midweek split at No. 22 Louisville. Ole Miss was hitting at a .334 clip with 15 home runs and 134 RBI and were 19-of-26 on steal attempts. As a pitching staff, the Rebels held to a 2.74 ERA with 143 strikeouts and 36 walks while allowing 46 earned runs. The Rebels were fielding at a .975 clip with 16 errors.
