NCBWA Stopper of the Year Midseason Watch List

GAINESVILLE, Fla.
– Ole Miss closer Wyatt Short was named to the midseason watch list for the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Stopper of the Year Award, the organization announced Thursday afternoon. After earning a spot on the preseason watch list, Short has put together an impressive 2016 campaign to be recognized as a serious candidate for the award given to the top reliever in NCAA Division I Baseball.

In 12 appearances, Short has six saves to go along with a 2-1 record and 2.33 ERA. While the junior southpaw is tied for the team lead in saves, he has also shown his versatility as a long reliever. Against No. 10 South Carolina (March 26), Short pitched a career-high 5.2 innings of relief and allowed just one unearned run on one hit. Through 27.0 innings this season, the lefty has recorded 22 strikeouts while only issuing five walks. When pitching at the back end of the bullpen, Short has not blown a save. Two of his six saves this season were versus No. 2 Louisville, helping Ole Miss claim a series over the Cardinals.

For his career, Short holds a 2.03 ERA and limits opposing hitters to a .207 average at the plate. His 19 career saves already rank fourth on the Ole Miss all-time charts.

Short was one of five relievers from the Southeastern Conference on the midseason watch list. The SEC had the most representation out of all conferences as a total of 40 relievers made the list. From the midseason watch list, five finalists will be selected on Wednesday, June 8 before the start of NCAA Super Regional play.

Short and the No. 9 Rebels return to action tonight, facing No. 8 LSU in a nationally televised showdown between two top 10 teams. First pitch from Swayze Field is slated for 6 p.m. CT with the game broadcast on SEC Network.
