Fortes, Feigl Selected on Day 2 of 2018 MLB Draft
June 5, 2018

SECAUCUS, N.J. – Nick Fortes and Brady Feigl joined Ole Miss baseball left-hander Ryan Rolison as the second and third Rebels selected in the 2018 MLB Draft on Tuesday.

After Rolison’s first-round selection Monday night, Fortes was chosen in the fourth round by the Miami Marlins, and Feigl went shortly thereafter, drafted in the fifth round by the Oakland Athletics.

Fortes, a junior catcher, turned in an outstanding season behind the plate, which saw him earn Johnny Bench Award Semifinalist, Second-Team All-SEC and SEC Tournament MVP honors. The Deland, Florida, native hit .319 with 11 home runs, starting in all 65 games for the Rebels, the majority of which came behind the plate. The Marlins’ fourth-round selection added 11 doubles and a triple while driving in 49 runs and scoring 56 as the Rebels’ three-hole hitter.

Feigl, a team captain for 2018, was outstanding on the mound for Ole Miss as well. He finished with an 8-5 record with a 4.03 ERA in 16 starts as the Rebels’ Saturday night arm. Over 91.2 innings of work, the junior out of Chesterfield, Missouri, struck out 93 batters compared to just 26 walks for a 3.6 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Opposing hitters were a collective .260 off Oakland’s round-five selection this season. Feigl made a major jump on the draft charts over the season. He was chosen in the 35th round by the Los Angeles Angels in 2017.

Ole Miss now boasts 102 selections in the Mike Bianco Era, including 25 in the first five rounds. This marks the first time since 2013 that the Rebels have had three draftees in the top five rounds.

The 2018 MLB Draft concludes tomorrow with rounds 11-40, beginning at noon CT.
