Each week here at OleMissSports.com we'll take a look at former Rebels in the Major Leagues and update Rebel fans on how the individual players (and their respective teams) are performing in a race for a pennant and ultimately a World Championship.
8 | Chris Coghlan | OF | Miami Marlins Coghlan has been on a hot streak at the plate for the Marlins the last 10 games, hitting at a .349 clip in that time to bring his season average up to a .277 mark in 2013. The Marlins have improved as Coghlan has warmed up at the plate, though that still means a 6-6 mark since our last update. Coghlan’s best performance came against the New York Mets when the outfielder went 8-for-13 with two runs scored and four RBI in the three-game series.
2 | Zack Cozart | SS | Cincinnati Reds Cozart continues to produce for the Reds with his offense and defense, hitting at a .244 clip through the last 10 games, including a trio of multiple-hit games. The shortstop has been extremely proficient in this week’s series with the Cubs, delivering a three-run bomb and going 4-for-9 with four runs scored and four RBI as the Reds won the first three games against the Cubs in the four-game series. Currently the Reds are 2.5 games behind the St. Louis Cardinals and a half game up on the Pittsburgh Pirates in the NL Central.
31 | Lance Lynn | RHP | St. Louis Cardinals Lynn continues to be one of the most consistent performers in the Major Leagues this season, holding an 8-1 record on the year through 13 starts for the Cardinals. He has helped St. Louis to first place in the NL Central with a 2.5 game lead on the Cincinnati Reds and a 3.0 game lead on the Pittsburgh Pirates. On the year, Lynn has 82 strikeouts to 29 walks and holds a 3.00 ERA for the Cardinals.
7 | Alex Presley | OF | Pittsburgh Pirates Recently called back up by the Pirates, Presley has helped the Pittsburgh offense since being moved back up five games ago. The outfielder went 3-for-5 at the plate against the Cincinnati Reds last week, a team the Pirates trail by half a game in the competitive NL Central, and hit a pinch hit home run on Wednesday night against the San Francisco Giants.
15 | Seth Smith | OF/DH | Oakland Athletics Smith and the Athletics remain atop the AL West standings this week, holding to a 1.0 game lead over the Texas Rangers. Smith has cooled off at the plate in recent weeks after a hot start to the season for Oakland, but turned in a two run night against the Giants in a single-game meeting with a 1-for-3 performance that included two walks at the end of May.
