Ole Miss Baseball Begins Fall Practice
Ole Miss Competes in Red Versus Blue Action
Sept. 19, 2015

OXFORD, Miss. – The Ole Miss baseball team began fall practice this weekend in preparation for the upcoming season. The Rebels divided into two teams, Red and Blue, and competed in intrasquad competitions both Friday and Saturday.

During Friday’s competition, sophomore Tate Blackman got the game rolling with a triple. Blackman ended the day going 3-for-4 with one run scored. Freshman Micah McHugh also stood out, hitting a home run and going 2-for-3 on the day with a single RBI.

“Overall it was a really good first weekend,” said head coach Mike Bianco. “We showed a little bit of everything. For the most part we pitched well, played solid defense and I was very pleased with our offense this weekend.”

In Saturday’s intrasquad, J.B. Woodman had a great fall practice tallying two hits, two runs and a single RBI. Over the course of the weekend, many pitchers saw action and appeared strong on mound.

“We had a lot of pitchers that ran out there today and they really attacked the strike zone,” noted Coach Bianco. “The pitchers really looked as though they were in good shape today.”

The returning Rebels were excited to be back on the field and the 17 newcomers were ready to see action as well. The Ole Miss baseball team also seemed to be in exceptional shape.

“The biggest take away from this weekend is that we look like we are in good shape, and not just as far as conditioning goes. We could sense that watching the workouts with strength coach Ben Fleming,” said Coach Bianco. “We are in good baseball shape. Sometimes pitchers dominate the first weekend because hitters aren’t ready to catch up to a 90 mph fastball, or handle breaking balls, but our guys looked as ready as I’ve ever seen a group of our players look in the first weekend.”

Fall practices will continue for the Rebels over the course of the next few weeks as they prepare for the start of the 2016 campaign. Ole Miss will be back next weekend, both Friday and Saturday, for more intrasquad action.
