Baseball Concludes Second Weekend of Intrasquads
Sept. 26, 2016

OXFORD, Miss. – The Ole Miss baseball team wrapped up its second week of fall practice with a pair of intrasquad scrimmages over the weekend at Swayze Field. While the first scrimmage highlighted the Rebel bats on Friday, the pitchers controlled Sunday’s intrasquad.

Several Rebels recorded multi-hit games Friday afternoon, led by Ryan Olenek. The sophomore went 4-for-5 with a triple, three RBI and two runs in his team’s 8-4 win. Junior Kyle Watson and freshman Trace Tyre tallied two hits apiece, while junior college transfer Chase Cockrell added a three-run homer in the victory.

David Parkinson, Will Ethridge and Parker Caracci each allowed one earned run over 3.0 innings of work. Parkinson struck out a team-high four, and Ethridge gave up just one hit out of the 11 batters he faced.

On the other team, senior Colby Bortles belted a home run to deep center field and smacked a triple as well. It was the first of two homers Bortles hit during the two-game weekend. Freshman shortstop Grae Kessinger went 2-for-4 with a run, batting in the two-hole. The bright spot was sophomore pitcher Andy Pagnozzi, who surrendered only two hits over three scoreless innings of work on the rubber.

Concluding the weekend, the Ole Miss arms filled the scoreboard with zeroes until freshman catcher Cooper Johnson singled in the game’s first run in the bottom of the seventh. Johnson’s two hits along with back-to-back homers by Bortles and Michael Fitzsimmons, catapulted the Red team to a 5-0 victory. The quartet of senior Sean Johnson, freshman Jackson Tavel, freshman Korey Bell and freshman Jason Barber limited the Blue team to only three hits.

Despite the setback, the Blue team had six solid scoreless frames from the duo of sophomore James McArthur and freshman Houston Roth. McArthur was bringing the heat Sunday night, striking out eight hitters and allowing only one hit in 3.0 innings. Roth put together a fine performance of his own, giving up one base hit and recording four strikeouts in a scoreless outing.

The Rebels will return to the diamond for two more intrasquad scrimmages this weekend. Friday’s Red-Blue matchup is slated for a 2:30 p.m. start (Sept. 30), while a 6:15 p.m. first pitch is scheduled for Sunday night (Oct. 2).
