Five Homers Highlight Baseball’s Weekend
Oct. 3, 2016

OXFORD, Miss. – Although the 2017 Ole Miss Baseball regular season is still four months away, the Rebels proved that they’re ready for Swayze showers to rain in right field. In two intrasquad scrimmages over the weekend, the Ole Miss bats belted five home runs to conclude the third week of fall practice.

Behind home runs by junior Tate Blackman and sophomore Chase Cockrell, the Blue squad took Friday afternoon’s intradsquad 8-4. Freshman Thomas Dillard and sophomore Ryan Olenek recorded two hits apiece, adding a double and triple, respectively. Junior Kyle Watson homered as well in the contest. On the mound, junior southpaw David Parkinson tossed 3.0 scoreless innings, allowing only one hit.

Wrapping up the weekend, the Rebels tallied 21 hits between the two squads. Back-to-back homers by freshman Cooper Johnson and redshirt sophomore Michael Fitzsimmons powered Red to a 5-1 win. Four freshmen earned multi-hit games to lead the team to victory, including Johnson, Grae Kessinger, Bryan Seamster and Trace Tyre. The freshmen knocked in four of the team’s five runs while also scoring crossing the plate a combined four times. Senior Sean Johnson got the start, keeping Blue off the scoreboard for 3.0 innings before freshman Jason Barber finished the job with 3.0 scoreless frames of relief.

For Blue, Cockrell capped off a strong weekend at the plate by going 3-for-4 with a double and one run. Bryce Blaum, Nick Fortes and Cole Zabowski went 2-for-3 in the effort as the underclassmen continue to produce at the plate throughout the fall.

The Rebels will return to the diamond for two more intrasquad scrimmages this week at Swayze Field (Oct. 7-8). Friday’s Red-Blue matchup is slated for a 2:30 p.m. start, while Saturday’s contest will have a 12 p.m. first pitch. All intrasquad scrimmages are free and open to the public.
