Fall Ball Recap: Blue Sweeps the Weekend
Oct. 10, 2016

OXFORD, Miss. – With 24 hits throughout the weekend, Blue used its offensive barrage to take a pair of intrasquad games at Swayze Field. Wrapping up the fourth weekend of Ole Miss Baseball’s fall practice, Blue defeated Red 5-4 on Friday before a convincing 9-3 victory on Saturday.

Behind the bats of Colby Bortles and Chase Cockrell, Blue got off to an early lead and held off Red for a one-run win. Bortles and Cockrell each recorded a single and double in their first two at-bats, driving in four of the team’s five runs. Freshman shortstop Grae Kessinger scored two of those runs, and junior Kyle Watson knocked in a run as well. On the mound, Sean Johnson, one of two seniors on the 2017 team, allowed just one run in 4.0 innings to earn the victory.

On the other side of the field, Tate Blackman tried to muster a Red comeback, going 2-for-4 with three RBI that included a two-run homer. Freshman Cole Zabowski went 2-for-2 at the dish, while James McArthur recorded a team-high five strikeouts through 3.2 innings of work on the rubber.

Everyone in the Blue lineup recorded at least one hit Saturday afternoon. Led by three hits apiece from Blackman, Cockrell and Will Golsan, the squad tallied 16 hits that led to nine runs. Golsan and Cockrell, along with junior college transfer Tim Rowe, combined for six RBI (two each) and five runs. Getting the start, Oxford native Jason Barber tossed 3.0 scoreless innings without allowing a hit.

Fellow freshman and Oxford native Thomas Dillard homered for Red, while Bortles smacked two more doubles to complete a solid weekend at the plate. Freshman Greer Holston was Red’s best pitcher, allowing one run on five hits through 3.0 innings.

Ole Miss Baseball returns to the diamond for two more intrasquad scrimmages this week at Swayze Field (Oct. 14-15). Friday’s Red-Blue matchup is slated for a 2:30 p.m. start, while Saturday’s contest will have a 12 p.m. first pitch. All intrasquad scrimmages are free and open to the public.
