Baseball Scrimmages Remain Competitive in Week Four

OXFORD, Miss. – As the weeks roll on, Ole Miss baseball’s intrasquad games continue to remain competitive with the culmination of the fall, the 2017 Pizza Bowl, which is just a couple weeks away.

This past weekend, there were highlights all around as Team Blue claimed an 8-2 win on Friday, and the Rebel bats came alive on Sunday with a combined nine home runs in a back-and-forth affair.

In Friday’s scrimmage it was Nick Fortes and Bryan Seamster who led the way at the plate, combining for six of the team’s 11 hits and five RBI. Fortes was 3-for-5 with four RBI and two home runs, while Seamster was 3-for-4 with two runs and a long ball. Golston Gillespie went yard for a 2-run shot, while Anthony Servideo, Will Golsan and Grae Kessinger added the remaining hits.

On the mound, Parker Caracci paved the way with an impressive six strikeouts and just two runs allowed in the start, while Austin Miller (three Ks) and Will Stokes (two Ks) combined for the final five scoreless frames.

For Team Red, Ryan Olenek had one of the RBI off a double in the first inning, before Tim Rowe drove him in off a sacrifice fly in that same inning. Cooper Johnson and Carl Gindl added one hit each. On the mound, Connor Green earned the start and worked four strikeouts in four innings, while Colin Coates, Olenek and Thomas Dillard rounded out the pitching for Team Red.

In Sunday’s outing it was not only one side that found its offensive stride, but both teams with a combined 30 hits. Team Blue had three players with multi-RBI performances led by Fortes’ three and Cole Zabowski’s three. Fortes hit one of his team’s three home runs, as did Zabowski along with Chase Cockrell. Those three combined for eight RBI, and Dillard, Olenek and Tyler Keenan also pitched in with multi-hit games.

For Team Red, Kessinger contributed with four RBI off a pair of home runs, while Michael Fitzsimmons had two RBI off two hits. Rowe went 3-for-4 with an RBI, and Tim Elko and Cooper Johnson also had three-hit performances.

On the mound Jordan Fowler earned the start for Team Red, while Maxwell Cioffi and Will Ethridge worked the final few frames. For Team Blue, Brady Feigl was solid in four innings allowing just one run with six strikeouts, while Emanuel Fernandez entered to close it out in relief.

The Rebels will continue fall work with practices at Swayze Field during the week, and intrasquads at Oxford Middle School on the weekend. This weekend’s scrimmage schedule will be Friday night at 6 p.m., followed by Sunday’s 1 p.m. intrasquad. That schedule will continue into next weekend leading up to the annual Pizza Bowl.
