OXFORD, Miss. – The Rebel baseball team wrapped up its fall scrimmage season this weekend with two tightly-contested matchups. Both games finished with a one-run differential, heightening the competitiveness amongst the players as the countdown to the 2017 Pizza Bowl narrows to just a few days.

On Friday, Parker Caracci earned the start for the Red team and led the way on the mound en route to a 5-4 win over the Blue team. Colin Coates was first in relief, and worked three innings with just as many strikeouts, but Will Stokes put the nail in the coffin in a save opportunity, with four strikeouts in just two innings of work.

For team Blue, Austin Miller and Connor Green shared the work evenly and gave up just five runs while combining for five strikeouts.

Chase Cockrell and Tyler Keenan spearheaded the work offensively for the Red team by combining for four out of the team’s nine hits. Nick Fortes had his team’s only home run of the day, a solo shot, while Grae Kessinger, Tim Rowe, Cole Zabowski, and Keenan all contributed with an RBI of their own.

On the other side of the ball, Cooper Johnson continued to stay hot this fall at the plate with a 2-for-3 day, including a home run. Behind Johnson’s effort, the Blue team put up nine hits, including one from eight of the nine batters in the lineup, but ultimately fell to the Red team, 5-4.

On Sunday, Kessinger and Will Golsan led the charge for team Blue, and combined to go 4-for-6 as they helped deliver their team a 5-4 victory. Kessinger provided the spark with a solo home run early, but it wasn’t until the final inning of the game that the Blue team took the lead. Down four runs in the final frame, Rowe knocked in a run while Golston Gillispie drove in two, but it was Bryan Seamster who ended the game with a walk-off hit to solidify the win.

For the Red team, Fortes was responsible for driving in three out of his team’s four runs with a three-run shot into the trees. Thomas Dillard provided the final run for the Red team with a home run of his own, while Carl Gindl, Ryan Olenek, Anthony Servideo, and Trace Tyre all contributed with a hit.

On the mound, the Red team rotated three pitchers who all remained efficient enough to carry their team to a win. Emanuel Fernandez started the game by giving up just one run, while Pierce Smith, who was first in relief, allowed just one opposing batter on base in two innings. Brady Feigl, as he continues to shine in the fall, came in for the final couple frames and struck out two on his way to saving the 5-4 victory for team Blue.

For the Red team, Max Cioffi began the game on the mound and allowed just one run while striking out three in two innings of work. Fellow freshman Jordan Fowler was next in the order and did not allow a run, while Will Ethridge closed out the game.

Though Sunday’s scrimmage wrapped up the fall weekend schedule, the Rebels will face off in the penultimate intrasquad matchup of the year, the Pizza Bowl. The game is set for Wednesday, Oct. 25 at 5:30 p.m. The 2017 Pizza Bowl will follow suit with the rest of the scrimmages and take place at Oxford Middle School due to construction, and as always, is open to the public.
